Seven English boys made it through to the knockout stages of the WTT Youth Contender Villa Real in Portugal, with Connor Green, Joseph Hunter and Jakub Piwowar doing so in two age groups.

Green went through in the under-19s and under-17s, in the older age group alongside Joseph Hunter, who made it through with a terrific 16-14 victory in the deciding game of his second match, having earlier pushed under-17 champion Daniel Berzosa of Spain all the way.

Hunter went out in the last 64, but Green made it through to the next round, where he was defeated by the world No 31 Junior and fifth seed Daniel Piguave of Ecuador.

Felix Thomis, James Hamblett, Maxim Stevens, Toby Ellis, Adam Dennison and Ben Piggott all went out in the groups.

In the under-17s, Green and Hunter again made it into the knockouts, as did Thomis, Ellis, Dennison and Jakub Piwowar.

Dennison and Piwowar went out in the last 64 – Dennison in a deciding game – but Green and Ellis went through to join Thomis and Hunter, who had a bye into the round of 32.

All four English boys went out at that stage, all with the exception of Ellis to higher-ranked opponents.

In the under-15s, brothers Jakub Piwowar and his younger brother Kacper (pictured at top of page) got through the groups – Kacper unlucky not to top his group as he narrowly lost 14-12 in a decider to Franciszek Kolodziejczyk of Austria.

Both went out in the round of 32, Jakub to top seed Tiago Abiodun of Portugal and Kacper to fourth seed Matej Haspel of Germany.

Kacper Piwowar went out in the group stage of the under-13 category.
