19 of the nation’s top junior players have travelled to the Commonwealth Games host city, Birmingham, to battle it out for Junior National Cup champion this weekend.

Top girls seed Jasmin Wong remains unbeaten after the first five rounds, with only one real test against Rebecca Savage that went to five games.

Wong beat both Bethany Ellis and Lauren Loosemore 3-0 and won her other two matches convincingly, justifying her top seeding at the event.

Scarlett Anders also had a great day with four wins and only one loss, and sits just one point below Wong in the standings.

A couple of upsets in the girls’ competition; Lauren Loosemore beat England’s Amy Marriott in the opening round 3-1, and Evelyn Pace managed to outclass higher seeded Megan Jones 3-1 in the third.

In the boys, things remain tight at the top with Louis Price leading the pack, Ben Piggot in second and Felix Thomis, Joseph Hunter and Larry Trumpauskas all tied in 3rd place with just two points separating the top five.

In his first time competing in the Junior National Cup, recently crowned National Champion Larry Trumpauskas was lethal in the first round, beating Thomas Rayner in straight sets 11-8, 11-5, 11-3 and also getting wins against Nahom Asgedom and Joshua Bruce.

Jakub Piwowar achieved qualification to this tournament through finishing in the top two of the Cadet National Cup earlier this year. Lowest seeded, he matched top seed Louis Price all the way through round one, taking it to the 5^th and only losing the last 11-9. 14-year-old Piwowar managed to get two wins on the board on day one against Joshua Bruce and Olly Cornish.

The competition is being held in Perry Barr, Birmingham, where the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games are taking place this summer as part of a series of National events taking place in the West Midlands in the run up to Birmingham 2022.
