Tianer Yu was a double champion at the Stiga Blackpool 4* at a busy weekend which saw 135 individuals and 34 teams in action.

The competition, sponsored by Thornton’s Table Tennis, is part of the qualifying pathway for the Mark Bates Ltd Cadet, U17 & Junior National Championships, so the field was high on quality and the competition fierce.

In the tightest final, Naphong Boonyaprapa overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat Josh Bruce and win the Junior Boys’ Singles.

It was 3-2 (11-13, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9) to the Nottingham player, who beat Larry Trumpauskas in three in the semi-finals and Jie Fu Tham in five in the quarters. Trumpauskas had himself come through a five-set quarter-final against Toby Ellis.

In the other half of the draw, Bruce won his semi-final in four against Joseph Dennison. Bruce had beaten Tom Rayner in the quarters, while Dennison defeated Harri Docherty at the same stage.

The Junior Girls’ Singles final was a little more routine than the boys’ as Tianer Yu (pictured top of page) beat Jersey’s Commonwealth Games player Hannah Silcock 3-1 (11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7).

Both semi-finals were done in three as Silcock beat Bethany Ellis 11-8, 11-4, 11-5 and Yu got past Erin Green 11-7, 11-2, 11-3.

Silcock had earlier had to stave off a Naomi Coker comeback in the first round (last 16) as she won 3-2 (11-6, 11-5, 11-13, 10-12, 11-1), while Ellis also won in five at that stage, against Saskia Key.

Yu’s other triumph was in the Under-17s, and again she faced Silcock in the final, though this time it was three straight (6, 7, 6).

Yu overcame Ellis in the semi-finals, emerging with a 3-1 (11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7) victory, while in the other half of the draw, Silcock came from behind to beat Key 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-7).

Adam Dennison was the champion in the corresponding boy’s category, beating Trumpauskas 3-2 (8-11, 13-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4) in the final.

Trumpauskas got through the semi-finals 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-6) against Yiannis Kazantzidis, while Dennison triumphed 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-9) against Elliott Chan.

Ella Pashley won the Cadet Girls’ Singles title thanks to a 3-1 (14-12, 6-11, 11-7, 11-3) win over Coker in the final.

Both girls needed four games in their semi-finals – Pashley overcame Darcey Taylor 13-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, while Coker defeated Jonabel Taguibao 10-12, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8.

Abraham Sellado took the Cadet Boys’ Singles title with a 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5) victory over under-13 national champion Max Radiven.

Sellado came through his semi-final against Chan Wei Sheung in three (6, 10, 8), while Radiven needed four against Rex Wong, taking it 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 15-13.

The under-13 Boys’ Singles was won by Adam Alibhai, who overcame Sellado in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Aarif Li, who lost to Sellado (10, 5, 9), and Joe Mulhern, defeated 7, 7, 6 by Alibhai.

The event included team competitions for the first time, which were well received with 34 teams entered across the categories.

The Junior Girls’ Team winners were Hannah Silcock and Megan Jones, representing Jersey, who defeated Fusion 3-2 (Tianer Yu and Saskia Key) in the final.

Draycott were the Junior Boys’ team winners. Represented by Naphong Boonyaprapa and Rhys Davies, they defeated Fusion’s Josh Bruce and Larry Trumpauskas 3-2 in the final.

In the Cadet age group, Ackworth, represented by Tilly Simms and Darcey Taylor, won the girls’ competition with a 3-1 final victory over Greenhouse (Isabella Turner- Samuels and Jonabel Taguibao).

The boys’ section was won by Warwickshire’s Wajid Wafiq and Rex Wong. They were due to play Darlington (Zac Greenhough, Abraham Sellado) in the final, but injury in the Darlington camp meant they had to concede.
