Denise Payet and Grigory Vlasov both lived up to their top seeding as they took the respective Women’s and Men’s Singles titles at the Preston Grand Prix.

Artur Caltabiano was a double winner in the Banded competitions at an event which saw 150 players in action at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre.

Women’s Singles

Denise Payet beat England colleague Mollie Patterson 3-1 (5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7) to win the Women’s Singles as the top two seeds met in the final.

Both had to dig deep to win their semi-finals in five, Payet against Anna Green (11-13, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10) and Patterson against Jasmin Wong (10-12, 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8).

Men’s Singles

The top two seeds met in the Men’s Singles final and it was the top seed who prevailed as Grigory Vlasov beat Chris Doran 3-1 (11-2, 6-11, 11-3, 12-10).

Vlasov had needed four as well in his quarter-final against James Hamblett and his semi-final against Jordan Wykes – the latter finished 11-2, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5.

Doran had a lengthy semi-final before getting past Mircea Neagu 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8).

Restricted Singles

Naphat Boonyaprapa and Chris Doran

Chris Doran made up for the Men’s Singles disappointment as he took the Restricted Singles with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-8) victory over Naphat Boonyaprapa.

Both semi-finals went to a decider as Doran won 3-2 (11-5, 7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5) against Mircea Neagu, while Boonyaprapa edged Umair Mauthoor 3-2 (12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 12-10).

It had also been five sets for Boonyaprapa in the quarters, overcoming Joe Killoran 11-9, 9-11, 3-11, 11-4, 11-7.

Under-21 Men’s Singles

Adam Dennison and Jie Fu Tham

Adam Dennison came from 2-1 down to defeat Jie Fu Tham and take the U21 Men’s title by a scoreline of 11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6.

He had earlier defeated James Hamblett 3-1 (12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8) in the semi-finals, while Tham beat Naphong Boonyaprapa 3-1 (11-1, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9).

Under-21 Women’s Singles

Jasmin Wong and Yat Poon

Jasmin Wong was the U21 Women’s champion as she overcame Yat Poon 3-1 (11-3, 11-3, 6-11, 11-4) in the final.

Poon earlier knocked out top seed Mollie Patterson in the semi-finals, the score in that one 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-6).

Wong beat Lara Whitton 3-1 (11-9, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7) in the semis, having come from 2-0 down in the quarter-finals to beat Anna Green 3-2 (9-11, 10-12, 14-12, 11-6, 11-3).

Veterans’ Singles

Kev Dolder and Rory Scott

Kev Dolder was a 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-7) victor in the final against Rory Scott to take the Veterans’ title.

It was 3-0 in both semi-finals as Dolder beat Phil Crankshaw 8, 3, 7 and Scott overcame Manoj Gandhi 5, 4, 8.

Crankshaw had to prevail 13-11 in a quarter-final decider against Larisa Titievskaja.

Women’s Band 1

Amy Marriott and Alexandra Titievskaja

Amy Marriot was the Women’s Band 1 champion as she beat Alexandra Titievskaja in the final. Marriott recovered from losing the first game to win 3-1 (7-1, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6).

Marriott defeated Katherine Vinas 3-0 (9, 7, 3) in the semis, while Titievskaja got through in a family battle against Larisa Titievskaja , winning it 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 14-12).

Larisa set up that clash with a tight 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 4-11, 16-14) win in the quarters, against Juliette Helfi.

Men’s Band 1

Garry Dodd and Naphat Boonyaprapa

Garry Dodd claimed Men’s Band 1 with a 3-0 (11-8, 13-11, 11-8) victory over Naphat Boonyaprapa.

In the semi-finals, Dodd overcame Umair Mauthoor in four (11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 12-10), while Boonyaprapa got past Mircea Neagu, also in four (7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7).

Back in the first round, eventual champion Dodd was taken the distance by Howard Onweng before edging it 3-2 (11-6, 5-11, 12-10, 2-11, 12-10).

Women’s Band 2

Emily Flynn and Larisa Titievskaja

The round-robin Women’s Band 2 was won by Larisa Titievskaja, who won all four matches without dropping a game.

There were some close calls, notably against Lisa Rinnhofer (15-13 in the first game) and Katherine Vinas (9, 9, 9).

Second place went to Emily Flynn, who won her other three matches.

Men’s Band 2

James Hamblett and Artur Caltabiano

Artur Caltabiano came from 2-1 down against James Hamblett in the final to win the band.

The scoreline was a hard-fought 3-2 (12-10, 9-11, 13-15, 11-7, 11-7) in favour of Caltabiano, who was also taken to five by Howard Onweng in the semi-finals before triumphing 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9.

Hamblett needed only three in his semi-final as he beat Adam Dennison 12-10, 11-9, 11-5.

Women’s Band 3

Kate Watkinson and Sophie Ackred

Sophie Ackred won the band as she won all three of her matches in the round-robin competitions, with Kate Watkinson in second place.

The match between the two saw Ackred win in four (11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-3), while Watkinson needed five to get past Monika Tomaszek (11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-4).

Men’s Band 3

Shae Thakker and Artur Caltabiano

Artur Caltabiano completed a double as he won the Band 3 final, overcoming para pathway player Shae Thakker 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-6).

Thakker had quite a battle to get into the final as he overcame Abraham Sellado 3-2 (14-16, 19-17, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4) in the semi-finals, while Caltabiano beat Jonathan Heslop 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7).

Women’s Band 4

Kate Watkinson and Monika Tomaszek

Kate Watkinson went one better than in Band 3 by taking the Band 4 title, beating Monika Tomaszek in the final. Unlike their Band 3 clash, it was done in three as Watkinson won 4, 5, 6.

Her semi-final was also three straight as she beat Muralitharan Bhanureka 11-9, 11-6, 11-7, but the other semi-final went to a decider as Tomaszek won 3-2 (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5) against Sophie Ackred.

Men’s Band 4

Joseph Dennison and Abraham Sellado

Joseph Dennison staged a super fightback to beat Abraham Sellado in a close-run final, eventually getting over the line 3-2 (10-12, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7).

The semi-finals were relatively straightforward as they were both done in three – Sellado defeating Yasir Mauthoor 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 and Dennison beating Daniel Fielding 11-7, 15-13, 11-8.

Men’s Band 5

Phil Crankshaw and Matthew Mooney

Matthew Mooney was the champion as he defeated Phil Crankshaw 3-1 (6-11, 13-11, 11-9, 12-10) in a close-fought final.

Crankshaw had fought hard to reach the final, coming from behind in the semi-final against Richard Horsfield to win 3-2 (12-10, 9-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-6).

Horsfield himself earlier had a protracted clash in the last 16, beating Marcus Batkin 3-2 (11-13, 12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8)

Mooney’s semi-final saw him defeat Ben Watson 3-1 (11-6, 4-11, 11-8, 13-11), but he was extended in the last 16 by Nicholas Lau before winning 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8).

Men’s Band 6

Matthew Mooney and Jonas Lee

Matthew Mooney was unable to make it a double as he was beaten in the Band 6 final by Jonas Lee – the scoreline 3-0 (13-11, 11-8, 11-8).

The beaten semi-finalists were Craig Brown – sunk 3-1 (11-4, 12-14, 11-3, 11-4) by Mooney – and Daniel McFaul, who was overcome 3-0 (11-0, 11-3, 11-3) by Lee.

Mooney was pushed by Manoj Gandhi in the quarters, winning it 3-2 (11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 10-12, 11-9), while Lee went the distance in both the last 16 and the quarter-finals.

First he got past Matthew George 3-2 (12-10, 11-7, 14-16, 10-12, 11-7), then came through 11-7, 6-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6 against Ben Watson.
