Ben Piggott beat the world No 14 and Joseph Hunter and Ralph Pattison reached the last 16 at the WTT Youth Contender Platja D’Aro in Spain.

Piggott (pictured above) took the scalp of Dragos Bujor of Romania, the sixth seed, in the last 64 of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, earning the reward of a tie against world No 12 and third seed Nicholas Lum, which is where is run ended.

Hunter picked up two good knockout victories, including against the higher-ranked Aleksi Rsanen of Finland, before going out 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4) Chen Hengda of China in the last 16.

Larry Trumpauskas, Louis Price, Jakub Piwowar, Connor Green and Toby Ellis went out in the last 64 – Price and Trumpauskas to top-30 players – and Adam Dennison in the group stage.

In the under-17s, Green reached the last 32, going out 3-0 (11-2, 11-8, 11-9) to Hsu Hsien-Chia of Chinese Taipei.

Trumpauskas, Hunter, Dennison and Pattison all got through the groups but went out in the last 64 to higher-ranked players. Piwowar went out in the groups.

Pattison reached the last 16 of the under-15s, going out to the third seed and eventual champion Kuo Guan-Hong of Chinese Taipei. Kacper Piwowar went out in the last 32. Abraham Sellado, who won the under-13s gold medal, went out in the group stage of the older age group.

In the girls’ events, GB Junior Squad pair Sophie Earley and Anna Hursey competed and ninth seed Hursey pulled off a big result in the under-19s, defeating second seed and world No 21 Chen Chi-Shiuan of Chinese Taipei 3-2 (11-13, 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5).

That saw her through to the quarter-finals, where she was defeated in four by Ma Xiaohui of China.

Earley went out in the under-19 groups, but qualified for the knockout stage in the under-17s, where she was beaten by second seed and world No 25 Yuna Ojio of Japan.
