Ben Piggott was the winner of the top group in the first Ormesby Senior Open 2 Star Tournament which was played at the club on Teesside on Sunday June 11. 

Piggott’s toughest match was against his Ormesby team-mate, Thomas Rayner, where Piggott won by 3 games to 1. 

The tournament was run on a large group basis with the top group being for eight players. Piggott (pictured above, photo by Chris Rayner) won the rest of his matches in straight games. Rayner was first challenged by fast improving cadet, Zac Greenhough, who was leading 2-1 before Rayner recovered to win the last two games 11-8 and 11-5. 

Rayner also had a five-set match with Karina Le Fevre which he won 11-6 in the decider. Le Fevre finished third, with Martin Lowe from Scarborough finishing in fourth place.

The competition was played on a ranking group basis with eight or nine players in each of the five groups. Although the event was mixed singles, there was a prize for the top female player, and this was won by le Fevre who beat her Ormesby team-mate Rebecca Savage 3-0.

Group 2 was won by Yorkshire’s Janet Adams, who finished equal top with Ormesby’s Ryan Nassau, but Adams was declared the winner on the basis of the head-to-head match which was won by Janet at 11-8 in the fifth in the first match of the day.  

Adams’ only defeat was to Louis Fell by 3 games to 1. Nassau won all the rest of his matches despite losing the opening set to Adams.

Group 3’s winner was Leo Conn, who beat Jemal Mohamed 11-9 in the fifth.

The fourth group was split into sections A and B, with James Bradbury beating Rafael Duarte to top the group whilst the B group was won by Northumberland’s Gareth Pearson, who beat Michael Yip by 3 games to 1.

The event ran very well on nine tables and produced a format which proved very popular with the participants, with a model system to be repeated in future events at the club.
