A Norfolk local league team is offering living proof that age is no barrier to competing in table tennis – as illustrated by their combined age of 336 years.

Eddie Fuller, Dick Boyce, Ray Lee and David Willgoss play for Bracecamp TTC in the Great Yarmouth & District League.

They are based at Bracecamp Parish Hall in Ormesby, Great Yarmouth, and this year finished as runners-up in their division.

Eddie wrote to Table Tennis England to try to find out if there is a team anywhere in the country with an older combined age.

He wrote: “I am 86 years old and Dick Boyce is 78, Ray our captain is 86 and David is 86.

“We still play competitive league table tennis in the Great Yarmouth & District Table Tennis League in Division 2 (slipping from Division 1 due to age!) This year we finished runners-up in Division 2, which was a great achievement as together as a team we have a combined age of 336 years!

“This got us wondering if there were any other teams out there still playing and achieving in league table tennis that can trump our combined team age or are we the ‘oldest’ league team in England?

“We are all still very competitive and keen to improve. Out of season we hold a club night and practice every Tuesday evening at Bracecamp, which just goes to show that you are never too old to learn.

“Table tennis a great sport and we are living proof that it can be played at any age.  Win or lose is not really what’s important (until the words “love all” are spoken!) but playing table tennis is so much more than just table tennis, it’s about exercise and keeping fit, socialising, making friends and generally enjoying our night out.

“Whilst we can do that, we will keep on playing.”
