A dominant England squad claimed 11 out of 12 golds at the Senior Schools International in Ireland.

In the team events, England almost had a clean sweep, with six golds, five silver and one bronze.

In the individual events which followed, there were five golds, four silvers and five bronzes for the England squad.

As well as the players, the England contingent included Head of Delegation Dave Pilkington, Non-Playing Captains Maria Ingles, Helen Lower, Kate Hughes, Steve Lyons, Mick Moir, Chris Parker and umpires Paul Nichols and Richard Horsfield.

Team events

Under-14 Boys

The England A team of Hugo Nguyen and Rex Wong beat Ireland B 5-0, Scotland A 4-1, Guernsey A 5-0 and Jersey A 5-0 in their group to finish first.

The B team of Aarif Li and Pablo Ramirez Rioja also finished top of their group by beating Wales 4-1, Ireland A 5-0, Jersey B 5-0, Scotland B 5-0 and Guernsey B 5-0.

In the semi-finals, England A beat Ireland A 3-0 and England B beat Scotland 3-2. In the final, England A beat England B 3-1 with one singles win each for Hugo and Rex, who together won the doubles. Pablo won the one match for the B team, beating Hugo.

Under-14 Girls

In the round-robin event, the England A team of Brooke Morris and Eva Eccles remained unbeaten through the event and claiming the gold medal. They beat Guernsey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Scotland A 3-2, Ireland A 5-0, Wales 5-0 and England B 5-0.

The England B team of Sophie Ackred and Kelly Ng claimed the silver medal by winning all of their other games. They beat Ireland A 4-1, Guernsey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Wales 4-1, Scotland 4-1 and lost to England A 0-5.

Under-16 Boys

England A, consisting of Joseph Cooper and Krish Chotai, beat Scotland B 5-0, Wales 5-0, Mixed 5-0 and Ireland B 5-0 to top their group.

The England B of Ben Dunkley and Starry Sheung also joined them in the semi-finals by winning their group, beating Scotland A 3-2, Jersey A 5-0, Isle of Man 5-0 and Ireland A 5-0.

Both semi-finals were an England versus Scotland battle as the teams played their respective ranked oppositions. Both teams won 3-0 to advance to the final.

The final was a close affair and swung one way and then the other. Starry took the first match for the England B team, Krish levelled the match before combining with Joseph to take a 2-1 lead for the England A team.

England B rallied with Ben levelling the match. Starry and Krish were nip and tuck all the way in the final, with Starry taking the match for England B 11-9 in the fifthset.

Under-16 Girls

The closest event in the competition was the round-robin event for the under-16 girls. England A, consisting of Esther Lam and Zarita Lo, beat Jersey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Ireland B 5-0, Scotland A 5-0, Ireland A 4-1, lost to Wales 2-3 before beating England B 3-2.

England B (Bethany Ellis and Mabel Shute) beat Ireland A 4-1, Jersey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Ireland B 5-0, Wales 3-2, Scotland A 5-0 and lost to England A 2-3. This meant there was a three-way tie between England A, England B and Wales, with all matches being 3-2. This led to a countback of sets with England A claiming the gold by two sets. Wales claimed the silver and England B the bronze.

Under-18 Boys

England A (Toby Ellis and Rhys Davies) topped their group by beating Guernsey 5-0, Scotland A 5-0, Jersey 4-1 and Ireland B 5-0. 

England B (Adam Dennison and Bertie Kelly) joined them in the semi-final, also topping their group, beating Wales 5-0, Scotland B 4-1, Isle of Man 5-0, Ireland 5-0.

The semi-finals saw England A beat Ireland A 3-0 and England B beat Scotland A 3-0.

In the final, Adam took the first match for England B, before Toby levelled the match for England A. Toby and Rhys gave England A the lead with the doubles, before Toby claimed the final win needed for England A to take the gold.

Under-18 Girls

The round-robin event for the under-18 girls went down to the last match between the two England teams.

Previously, England A (Saskia Key and Megan Jones) beat Isle of Man 5-0, Guernsey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Scotland A 5-0, Ireland 4-1 and Jersey 3-2.

England B (Erin Green and Anna Green) beat Ireland 5-0, Isle of Man 5-0, Guernsey 5-0, Scotland B 5-0, Jersey 3-2, Scotland A 5-0.

The England A v B match was close throughout with Megan winning both singles for England A and combining with Saskia to take the doubles. Erin and Anna both won one each for England B.

Individual events

Sunday saw the singles events and all England players successfully finished in the top two of their groups to advance to the knockout competition.

Under-14 Boys

In the preliminary round, Hugo Nguyen was unable to join the other three boys in the quarter-finals as he lost out 0-3 to Joe Mulhern.

In the quarter-finals, Aarif Li beat Ben Hart 3-1, Pablo Ramirez-Rioja beat Harry Street 3-0 and Rex Wong beat Joe Mulhern 3-0.

In the semi-finals, Aarif beat Clifford Tam 3-2 to make it an all-English final as he was joined by Rex who beat Pablo 3-2. In the final, Rex beat Aarif 3-0 to take the gold.

Under-14 Girls

In the quarter-finals, Brooke Morris got the better of Eva Eccles 3-0 and Sophie Ackred beat Kelly Ng 3-0.

In the semi-finals, Brooke beat Amelie David 3-0, however Sophie found Nichole Lee too strong, losing 0-3. In the final, Brooke lost out 9-11 in the fifth to Nichole to take the silver.

Under-16 Boys

In the preliminary round, Joe Cooper was unable to join the other three in the quarter-finals as he lost out, 1-3 to Daniel Tibbetts.

In the quarter-finals, Krish Chotai beat Daniel 3-0, Starry Sheung beat Alex Lo 3-0; however, Ben Dunkley missed out on a semi-final place, losing 1-3 to Nathan Hogg.

Krish beat Starry 3-1 in the semi-final and was joined in the final by Nathan Hogg. Krish took the match 3-1 to take home the gold.

Under-16 Girls

In the quarter-final of the U16 girls, Zarita Lo beat Niamh Mason 3-1, Mabel Shute beat Grace Looney 3-1 and Esther Lam beat Ruby Elliot 3-0, however Beth Ellis was unable to make it an all-England semi-final line-up as she lost out 0-3 to Darcey Taylor from Wales.

In the semi-finals, Esther beat Darcey 3-0 and Mabel make it an all-England final, beating Zarita 3-0. In the final, Esther beat Mabel 3-0.

Under-18 Boys

Rhys Davies started off in the preliminary matches against Tom Irwin and won 3-0 to advance to the quarter finals to join the other boys. Toby Ellis beat Rhys 3-0 and Adam Dennison joined him in the semi, beating Charlie McGowen 3-0, however Bertie Kelly was unable to join them in the semi-finals as he lost 9-11 in the fifth to Adam Faulkner.

Toby and Adam faced each other in the semi-finals with Toby progressing 11-6 in the fifth. He met Adam Faulkner in the final, where he went onto claim the gold winning in four sets.

Under-18 Girls

The quarter-finals saw two all-England ties as Anna Green beat Megan Jones 3-1 and Erin Green got the better of Saskia Key 3-0. In the semi-final, Anna and Erin both won 3-0, beating Hannah Silcock (Jersey) and Emily O’Flynn (Ireland) respectively.

Erin won the battle of the Greens in the final 3-0 to take the gold.
