Four young English athletes reached the semi-finals at the WTT Youth Contender Podgorica in Montenegro.
Adam Alibhai and Kacper Piwowar (pictured above) both topped their groups with 100% records in the Under-13 Boys, with Alibhai defeating Ireland’s Peadar Sheridan in five.
Alibhai then beat Romania’s Raul Creucu in the quarters, while Piwowar had a bye into the semis. However, despite good showings, both boys were beaten in the last four – Piwowar in five by Sheridan and Alibhai by Spain’s Alexander Malov in four. Malov beat Sheridan in five in the final.
In the Under-15 Mixed Doubles, Isaac Kingham & Ella Pashley had a good 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-13, 11-7) win over Borislav Rajic & Jana Havela of Serbia in the quarter-finals.
They faced China’s Zhai Jiale & Jiang Yiyi and at 1-1, 7-7 it was delicately poised. But the Chinese pair stepped on the gas to win 3-1 (7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-3).
In the under-17s, Jakub Piwowar reached the quarter-finals and Ralph Pattison the last 16 in the boys, and Sienna Jetha got to the round of 16 in the girls. Kingham, Pashley and Max Radiven went out in their respective group stages.
All other pairs involving English players went out in the quarter-finals of the respective under-19 and under-15 Mixed Doubles.
There is English representation in the Under-19 Boys’ Singles and in both Under-15 singles categories, which begin on Friday.
