London Academy opened up a two-point lead at the top of the Senior British league Championship Division and remain the only unbeaten team after weekend two at Nottingham TTC.

The weekend started with four teams unbeaten – BATTS leading the way from London Academy, both on 7pts, with Urban and Brighton just behind having drawn an additional match each.

Urban’s was the first record to go, and in spectacular style as they suffered an 8-0 whitewash at the hands of Wymondham – a first victory for the Norfolk side.

It started with a come-from-behind win by Adam Fuzes against James Hamblett (11-13, 11-9, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7), but the only other match to go the distance saw Isaac Kingham defeat Jasmin Wong 11-9 in the fifth.

Brighton retained their own unbeaten record with an 8-0 win over Ormesby, while it was 6-2 for London Academy over Perry Dale, Paralympian Ashley Facey taking a double for the losing team.

BATTS beat the host club Nottingham 5-3 and had to dig deep to do so. They led 3-0 when Adam Nutland had beaten Joe Sawyer 11-5 in the fifth, but Nottingham hit back to make it 3-3 as a couple more matches were decided in the fifth – Owen Brown beating Mollie Patterson and Olly Cornish seeing off Nutland 12-10.

However, Ralph Pattison completed a double as he beat Brown in three and then Patterson sealed it for BATTS by coming from 2-1 down to beat Sawyer 3-2 (11-7, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Fusion and PPong had gone into the first round of fixtures as the only teams without a point, so something had to give – and it did so in Fusion’s favour as they took it 5-3.

They couldn’t find a way past Harri Docherty, who put PPong ahead and later won the fifth match – but Fusion won the three in between and then took matches six and seven to make sure. Tianyi Yu won both his matches 11-2 in the fifth, against Matthew Westworth and Joseph Marlor.

The Saturday afternoon action saw a summit meeting as the leading two met on the TV table. And it went the way of London Academy, defeating BATTS 5-3.

It could have been more emphatic as they led 5-1, although it was BATTS who took the first match as Pattison beat Edward Wesshagen in three.

From there, the Londoners put their collective foot down, starting with an 11-9 in-the-fifth win for Gabriel Achampong against Joe Ferguson. Jerry Fung won two, including inflicting a first defeat of the season on Pattison, while Liam McTiernan and Wesshagen won one apiece.

Two five-game wins for BATTS made it a more flattering scoreline as Luc Miller edged Achampong 3-2 (13-11, 8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 14-12), saving three match points in the fourth and then five in the fifth before taking his first match point, and Nutland then defeating McTiernan in 11-8 in the decider.

Brighton remained unbeaten with a 4-4 draw against Wymondham and had to come from 3-1 and 4-2 to claim a point. Rhys Davies put Wymondham ahead, beating Krish Chotai 15-13 in the fifth, while Kingham went to 18-16 in beating Aaron McKibbin in the fourth. Joseph Langham-Ferreira won two for Brighton, but Kingham’s win over Chotai made it 4-2 to Wymondham – but Brighton hit back to win the next two, Mark Scutts beating Adam Fuzes and then McKibbin sealing a point as he beat Ashwin Raman in four.

PPong picked up their first point courtesy of a 4-4 draw against Perry Dale. They led 2-0 and 3-1, and then took the lead a third time when Pawel Orzechowski beat Simon Noutch 15-13 in the fifth. But Max Radiven rescued a point for Perry Dale by beating Westworth in three. Radiven and Orzechowski had earlier fought out a super-close match, won 3-2 (3-11, 4-11, 14-12, 12-10, 13-11) by the latter.

Fusion made it back-to-back victories as they overcame Ormesby 6-2, with doubles for Josh Bruce and Robert Pelc. It was also 6-2 for Nottingham, inflicting a second successive defeat on Urban, who were in the match at 2-2 but lost the next four ties, all in four games. Max Stevens and Joe Sawyer took two each for the victors.

Sunday’s first round of matches saw London Academy power to an 8-0 win over Urban, though Wesshagen was taken to 12-10 in the fifth by Hamblett, while BATTS returned to winning ways with a 6-2 victory against Perry Dale. There were two particularly close matches in that one, BATTS’ Patterson beating Sam Perry 13-11 in the fifth but Ferguson losing 12-10 to Kev Dolder in the decider.

Brighton’s unbeaten record went in this round as Nottingham sent them to a 5-3 defeat, opening up a 3-0 lead which they extended out to 5-1 before Brighton pulled two back. Nottingham won all four matches which went to a deciding game, two of them taken by Cornish and one each by Stevens and Aleeko Hazarika.

Wymondham kept on their roll with a 5-3 triumph over Fusion in a match which featured four deciding sets – curiously, three of them were won by the overall losers, including Yu’s double. The overall match stood at 3-3 before Kingham and Connor Whitehead won the final two, against Pelc and Robert Domingo respectively.

The 4-4 draw between PPong and Ormesby was nip and tuck as PPong led 1-0 but trailed 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 before Paul Ciccheli completed his personal double by beating Abraham Sellado in four. Graeme Barella won two for Ormesby.

Wymondham picked up their second 8-0 win of the weekend as they sunk Ormesby in the fourth and final round. Only one match went the distance, Fuzes beating Adam Webster 14-12 in the fifth.

Urban completed a miserable weekend with a four successive defeat – 6-2 at the hands of Perry Dale, though at 3-2 it was still in the balance, Hamblett having won his two matches for Urban, including in the fifth against Noutch. Perry and Facey both took doubles for the victors.

It was 5-3 for Nottingham against Fusion as the hosts cemented third place in the table. Fusion twice came back to level the match at 1-1 and 2-2, and then won match seven to retain an interest in claiming a point, but Hazarika sealed it for Nottingham in four against Domingo. Sawyer and Stevens both won twice for Nottingham.

The top two both won to keep their positions in the table. BATTS enjoyed a 7-1 margin against PPong and were only denied a full house when Pattison had to withdraw with injury before starting his match against Docherty.

For London Academy, it was a slightly less one-sided 6-2 over Brighton, the Academy winning five in a row from 1-1 after Langham-Ferreira had levelled for the south coast side.

All of which means London Academy lead the table on 15pts, two ahead of BATTS, with Nottingham a further point back. PPong are bottom, having not yet tasted victory, though they did draw twice over the second weekend.

In the averages, Isaac Kingham of Wymondham rocketed to the top as he won all eight of his matches over the weekend. He has identical stats to Urban’s Joseph Hunter – who was not in action this time.

Of the players who have been at both weekends, Ralph Pattison of BATTS leads the way with 14/15 for a percentage of 93.33. London Academy’s Edward Wesshagen is just behind on 14/16.

The next Championship action is on Saturday December 9, with two sets of matches to complete the pre-Christmas programme.
