Wales and GB athlete Anna Hursey won a silver medal in the Under-19 Girls’ Doubles at the World Youth Championships, held in Slovenia.
Hursey was partnered by Germany’s Annett Kaufmann and the pair were fourth seeds. They met Chinese third seeds Kuai Man & Xu Yi in the final and were defeated 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-4).
Earlier in the competition, Hursey & Kaufmann got past Sanaya Buddhadasa (AUS) & Mariam Younes (EGY) 3-0 in the round of 16 and the Brazilian-USA duo of Giulia Takahashi & Sally Moyland 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
In the semis, they faced Poland’s Anna Brzyska & Zuzanna Wielgos, who had knocked out the top seeds from India in the previous round, and it was a 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-2) scoreline in favour of Hursey & Kaufmann.
In the Mixed Doubles, Hursey partnered Nicholas Lum of Australia and they won their first match 3-0 against the Puerto Rico-Ukraine combination of Angel Naranjo & Veronika Matiunina (7, 7, 10).
That put them into the last 16, where they were defeated by Romania’s Eduard Ionescu & Ioana Singeorzan by a scoreline of 3-2 (11-5, 7-11, 8-11, 15-13, 11-8) – they held match points at 10-9 and 12-11 in the fourth.
In the singles, world No 19 Junior Hursey went out in the first round – the round of 32 – to Zuzanna Wielgos of Poland (WR 37), who won 4-2 (11-4, 13-15, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6).
