The draw for the singles competitions at the Paris Olympic Games has handed Liam Pitchford a tie against a teenager at his first Games, while Anna Hursey will face a top-30 player.

Pitchford’s opponent is the Fijian 19-year-old Vicky Wu, currently ranked No 275 in the world and his country’s first ever Olympic table tennis competitor.

There is the prospect in the second round of a rematch with Darko Jorgic, who beat Pitchford in six games in the last 32 of the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Slovenia’s Jorgic is the world No 18 and the 13th seed in Paris.

Whoever makes it through those brackets could face fifth seed Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei in the last 16 – he is the top-ranked player in that section of the draw.

Hursey faces world No 28 Manika Batra of India, the 18th seed, in her round of 64 tie. The winner will come up against either Prithika Pavade of France, the 12th seed, or Neda Shahsavari of Iran. Japan’s eighth seed Miu Hirano is the top-ranked player in that section of the draw.

Co-incidentally, Hursey’s opponent for her Olympic debut is the same one as faced by Tin-Tin Ho in her first match at this level, at the last Games in Tokyo.

Batra, who was the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, prevailed 4-0 (11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9) against Ho.
