Table tennis siblings Bethany and Thomas Ellis are doing some hard yards as they aim to raise £1,000 for a cancer charity.

They are covering 130km in a week – 18km every day – and are collecting donations in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Bethany is running the distance around their home town of Morecambe, while Thomas is joining in on his bicycle. The challenge began on Monday and will end on Sunday 4 August.

Bethany, who is in the top 20-ranked Junior Girls, is no stranger to this kind of fundraising initiative, having raised £1,800 with a similar challenge in 2020, which made headlines when she received support and a donation from boxing world champion Tyson Fury, who lives locally.

This time, her younger brother Thomas, who played in the under-10s category at the Mark Bates Ltd U10-13 Nationals this year, wanted to join in.

Bethany said: “He says he wants to be involved to ‘make people believe they are stronger than what they may think’.”

The duo are supporting the charity in memory of their grandmother, who sadly died from myeloma three years ago.

Bethany said: “My grandma always supported me and my brothers with our table tennis and achievements and would be proud of us doing this.”
