As the sunshine begins, the table tennis action shows no signs of slowing down for a summer break! One of the standout highlights for June was my involvement in the London Youth Games at Redbridge Sports Centre. This was my second time being part of the event, but the first time I had the opportunity to actively assist, making it a truly memorable experience.

Working alongside John Dennison, the tournament director, was a fantastic learning opportunity. John’s wealth of experience in organizing large-scale events like this was invaluable. Not only did I gain insights into managing a smooth-running competition, but I also enjoyed catching up with him on all things table tennis—and even a bit of football! The passion and enthusiasm from the London Youth Games team and the volunteers were absolutely infectious. It’s clear that everyone involved, from the organisers to the participants, was deeply committed to making the event a success, and their energy was contagious throughout the day.

This year’s competition saw an impressive turnout, with 17 London boroughs participating in the girls’ tournament and 25 boroughs competing in the boys’ event. The atmosphere was electric, and the level of competition was fierce, as each borough was represented by players who were determined to give their all. It was particularly rewarding to see so many young people engaging with the sport, many of whom I had the privilege of meeting earlier in the year at the Jack Petchey Schools Table Tennis Competitions. It was a pleasure to reconnect with them and offer words of encouragement as they battled it out in the tournament.

As the day progressed and the competition intensified, I found myself with the exciting—and slightly nerve-racking—responsibility of umpiring the girls’ semi-finals and final. Standing so close to the action, I was able to witness first-hand the incredible skill level of these young athletes. I was also keenly aware of my role, eager to ensure there were no mistakes in my calls. The players’ focus and talent, coupled with the passionate guidance from their coaches, made for thrilling matches. It was a true testament to the hard work and dedication these athletes put into the sport.

Once the finals wrapped up, it was heartwarming to see so many teams and supporters sticking around for the medal presentations. It was a wonderful moment of celebration as the winning teams took to the podium to receive their medals, with smiles and cheers echoing through the venue. The pride and joy on the faces of the athletes, coaches, and supporters alike were a reminder of why events like this are so important—they provide not only a platform for competition but also an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate achievement and passion for sport.

All in all, the London Youth Games was a brilliant day, and it was an honour to play a small part in such a well-organised and exciting event. With young talent on display and the dedication of everyone involved, it’s clear that table tennis in London has a bright future ahead. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!
