Last season’s runners up, Ormesby, made a dream start to their British League campaign with a comfortable 6-1 home win over Drumchapel Glasgow.

The hosts, represented by Enio Mendes, Sam Mabey and Ben Piggott, registered a comfortable victory over a Drumchapel side that put up a fight but were unable to ever really threaten a surprise result.

Mendes stormed his way past a young Joe Mulhern in straight sets. The young Scot recently impressed for Drumchapel’s second team in Division B1, but Mendes was a step up here.

It wasn’t all straight forward for Ormesby though and they were soon pegged back as Drumchapel’s number one, Danny Bajwa, produced a sublime performance to defeat England number nine Mabey 3-1 in what was a huge scalp.

Ormesby were on the ropes going into the doubles, finding themselves 1-0 down in sets, but managed to pluck out a 3-1 win thanks to the pair of Mendes and Piggott as they came through a tough test against Bajwa and Victor Guang Shi.

Guang Shi then made his first singles appearance, narrowly missing out at the hands of Piggott in a game of tight sets, with Piggott running out a 3-1 winner.

With Drumchapel needing a win to stay alive, they looked to Bajwa again to provide them the pedestal for a comeback. The Scotsman couldn’t repeat his earlier heroics, losing 3-0 to an impressive Mendes.

With the win now secured, Ormesby could play with freedom and they certainly did that. Piggott eased past Joe Mulhern 3-0 to make it 5-1 to the hosts going into the final game.

Sam Mabey put the icing on the cake, atoning for his earlier loss with a solid performance in a 3-1 victory against Guang Shi.

This rounded off a strong start for a side in Ormesby who will certainly be looking to challenge for Brighton’s crown after narrowly missing out last year.
