Women’s divisions

Hurey Ahmetoglu

Champions Ellenborough may already have done most of the heavy lifting towards retaining their title as they swept all before them on Weekend 1 to open up a four-point lead at the top.

They won all five matches, dropping only four individual matches all weekend, to lead the way from Foresters and Bribar Deighton.

It was four 5-1 victories for Ellenborough and a 6-0 success against Market Rasen, so not surprisingly they rarely looked in trouble – though Topspin Fusion did level the match score at 1-1 in Round 2 when Malgorzata Muda defeated Sara Williams in four. Muda also pushed Tumay Ekrem to a decider, although it would not have affected the match outcome by that stage.

Foresters also had their moments in Round 5 as Jurate Braizaityte was beaten 12-10 in the fifth by Williams, and Kinga Oryl took Hurey Ahmetoglu the distance as well. When Gabriela Tankel put Foresters on the board y beating Sanja Clements 3-2, the match score was 2-1 to Ellenborough – but that was as close as Foresters could get.

The teams in second and third drew 3-3 when they met in Round 3. Foresters led 2-1 but trailed 3-2 before Brazaityte completed a personal double by beating Alice Flatman in four to secure a draw.

Ellenborough naturally dominated the averages, occupying the top three positions. Ahmetoglu’s was the only 100% record, from eight matches.

Butterfly Lilleshall Lightning

IPS Tigers stayed unbeaten to open up a three-point lead in Division One, ahead of Bribar Knighton Park and DOJO Card Terminals.

The latter was also unbeaten, but with only one victory. Their four draws included the match against the leaders in Round 3. DOJO twice led that one, but Zoe Podmore’s 3-2 victory over Andrea Harrison in match 5 put Tigers in front. However, Zoe Cheesman beat Sarah Short in three to earn a point for DOJO.

Cheesman had an 80% win-rate from 10 matches, though it was Teresa Bennett of Bribar Knighton Park who tops the standings with 7/8, for 85.5%.

Ellenborough’s second team head the Division Two standings and are unbeaten in the eight-team division. However, having drawn two of their five matches, their lead ahead of Foresters IV and Foresters III is two points.

Foresters III are also unbeaten, with one win and four draws, the draws including matches against both their club-mates and the leaders. Foresters IV and Ellenborough II also drew, keeping the top of the table tight.

Gillian Lesh of Ashford heads the averages with 7/8, ahead of Debs Barrow of Ellenborough, who won eight of her 10.

There are joint leaders of the eight-team Division Three, with Northern Belles edging ahead of Butterfly Lilleshall Lightning on sets difference.

The two teams drew 3-3 in the first round and then went on to win their remaining four matches. Lilleshall led 2-1 and, after Clare Styles beat Karen Aitkenhead 12-10 in the fifth, 3-2. But Christine Williams defeated Zsuzsanna Kalman in four to seal a point for the Belles.

Although players from both teams are prominent in the averages, it is Ikuko McMahon of Fulham Brunswick who tops with pile with nine wins from 10 matches.

Men’s divisions

The top two from last season are the top two again in the Premier Division at the halfway point of the season, and there is little to separate Ormesby and Bribar Knighton Park.

The former lead the way on sets difference after both teams won three and drew two to put them a couple of points ahead of third-placed Topspin Fusion.

KP drew their first match, against Lilleshall, who refused to be shaken off despite trailing 2-0 and 3-2 in a match in which five of the six ties went to a decider and five players won at least once.

Bribar moved 3-2 ahead when Niall Cameron beat Richard Jermyn 16-14 in the fifth, but Paul Cicchelli recovered from 2-0 down to beat Jason Ramage 11-9 in the fifth to secure the draw and complete a personal double.

The top two met in Round 4 and Ormesby may be kicking themselves as they saw a 3-0 lead slip away. Ferenc Horvath started the comeback in the fifth against Neil Charles, and Chris Rogers and Jason Ramage completed the recovery as every player won once.

Ormesby perhaps had a hangover from that match as they again saw a lead wiped out in Round 5, this time seeing Fusion come from 3-1 down to claim a point.

With no individuals unbeaten, it is Adam Fuzes of Ormesby who tops the averages with 7/8 for 87.5%, ahead of Jacek Koziarski of Central, who won 8/10.

C Jenkins Windows lead Division One (Gp 1) with a perfect record of five victories, which gives them a three-point lead over Cippenham.

The leaders did not have it all their own way, with three 4-2 victories among their haul, including in the Round 4 match with Cippenham.

In fact, they were never in danger of losing that one, although they needed Daryl Strong to confirm the win by beating Martin Adams in the final match.

That win was one of a perfect 10 out of 10 for Strong across the weekend, a feat matched by his team-mate Stewart Crawford. Not surprisingly, they top the averages.

Division One (Gp 2) sees Horsham Spinners two points clear at the top, ahead of Foresters A. Spinners are unbeaten, though they dropped points in two drawn matches, against BATTS and, in the final round, London Moberly.

The leaders needed Oleh Biletskyi’s victory over Kiran Seshadri Chidambaram in the last match to rescue their unbeaten record.

The victory also ensured Biletskyi notched a perfect weekend of 10 victories, putting him top of the averages.

It’s tight at the top of Division Two (Gp 1), where Joola Plymouth are unbeaten and a point ahead of Nailsworth Phoenix, with Stocksbridge a further point back.

Plymouth dropped just the one point, against Stocksbridge in Round 3, as Dave Randerson came from 2-1 down to beat Kevin Buddell in the final match to deny Plymouth.

Buddell’s colleagues Paul Whiting and Paul Giles top the averages with 100% and 90% respectively from the full 10 matches.

Wensum are three points clear in Division Two (Gp 2), with a perfect record of five victories and only six individual matches dropped.

Halton and Ashford are the two teams in closest attendance in the table, and as well as losing to the leaders, they drew with each other in a thrilling match only decided at the very end as Tony Worthington secured a draw for Halton by defeating Michael Silver 3-2 (14-12, 5-11, 11-8, 10-12, 14-12).

In the averages, Serafim Melo of Wensum won all his eight matches to stand ahead of Percy Collino (Ashford) and Wayne Mason (Wensum), who both won 9/10.

Admiral Paws lead the way in Division Three (Gp 1) and already have a four-point lead over nearest challengers Draycott III.

The leaders won every match, including 4-2 wins over Draycott and St Georges II, the latter in a match which Admiral trailed 2-1.

At the top of the averages are two players on 90% from 10 matches – Alan Cherry of Draycott and Jaroslaw Chrzanowski of Admiral Paws.

BATTS II lead TableTennisDaily Vets by a point in Division Three (Gp 2), with both unbeaten. They drew 3-3 with each other in Round 5, a match which BATTS led 3-1 before victories for David Charlton and Mark Ward pulled TTD level.

TTD’s earlier 3-3 draw with Cutnall Green meant there was a point of daylight in favour of BATTS at the top come the end of the weekend.

The averages are led by Ward and Zayd Mauthoor of BATTS, both managing eight wins out of 10.

Zayd Mauthoor

The 10-team Division Four is led by Foresters E, who won all five of their matches. But with matches still to play against second-placed Ajax Wolvey and third-placed Butterfly Lilleshall B, all that could change.

Wolvey are two points behind, having won four matches, with Lilleshall a point further back.

Steve Brunskill of Swerve boasts the only 100% record in the division, from eight matches. Wolvey’s Mat Hobday won nine out of 10.

York Gardens have a perfect record of five victories, with only six individual matches lost, as they head Division Five (Gp 1) by three points from Loughborough Unicorn.

Unicorn would have been closer but for dropping a point in a 3-3 draw against Draycott V, which Unicorn led 3-1 after three successive 3-2 victories.

The leaders dominate the averages, with Piotr Odelski winning all his 10 matches and team-mate Peter Stahlman 9/10. A third York player, Winston Johnson, is also on 100%, though from only four matches.

Guernsey are unbeaten and lead Division Five (Gp 2) with a record of four wins and one draw, to it two points clear of Draycott IV.

The draw came in the meeting with their closest rivals, though Guernsey led 3-1 before Malcolm Truman and Allan Lumpod struck back for Draycott.

Two players have 100% records – Phil Ogier of Guernsey, from eight matches, and Neil Myatt of Albert, from six.
