To say the beginning of Brighton’s Senior British Club League Premier Division title defence has been remarkable would be doing it a disservice. Two rounds in, two wins on the board, not a single set dropped.
The champions notched another whitewash in Scotland as they resoundingly dispatched Drumchapel Glasgow, who are doing it tough at the beginning of the campaign with two defeats.
Brighton have dropped just eight ends so far and they proved too strong for a Drumchapel side who, in mitigation, are still without some of their front-line performers.
Seven to nil doesn’t quite tell the full tale, as the hosts took the first end in four of the seven matches. However, Brighton’s class eventually prevailed. Callum Evans was a welcome addition for the visitors here, replacing Will Bayley MBE, and he wasted little time getting into gear as he stormed to a straight-ends victory over Danny Bajwa, who was looking to build on an excellent win over Sam Mabey last time out.
The next five contests were tighter, with Drumchapel offering some resistance. This certainly wasn’t a walk in the park for the champions. Shoma Nishihara was involved in two of those games and had to repel rising youngster Joe Mulhern, who threatened a shock victory when he pegged his opponent back in the second. Nishihara, however, eventually proved too strong. His victory over Bajwa also came with complications after going a game down but he tied the match and crucially took the third 12-10, after which it became more comfortable.
After winning the doubles with Callum Evans, David Anderrson was involved in an explosive battle with Victor Guang Shi, who set the tone for the contest with a ripper of a third-ball backhand to claim the first point.
Guang Shi would take the first end 14-12 after a string of entertaining exchanges. That would continue throughout, with both players happy to drift away from the table and engage in long rallies. Guang Shi offered some great manipulation and variety, but Andersson’s consistency eventually showed as he came through the next three ends. It was probably the standout game of the afternoon.
Anderrson completed a double with a 3-0, routine victory over Mulhern and the rout was completed by Evans, who overcame another barrage of highlight-reel shots from Guang Shi to come from a game down and win 3-1.
Drumchapel host BATTS next up, while Brighton will head to Fusion.
