Table Tennis England are extremely disappointed to learn this morning that table tennis will not be part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
It was confirmed that there will be no racquet sports at all, therefore squash and badminton are also excluded.
The event programme has been slimmed down to 10; the other sports impacted by this include hockey, diving, road-based athletic and biking events, rugby sevens and rhythmic gymnastics.
Adrian Christy, Chief Executive, said: “Whilst it’s great to see the Commonwealth Games confirmed for 2026 after so much uncertainty, we are disappointed that table tennis is not to be included in the shorter form sports programme in Glasgow. I have asked to receive some further information to understand the factors that informed this decision.
“We are aware of the engagement the ITTF had with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and, like all sports, hoped that a way could be found to ensure our inclusion. However reducing from the 19 sports that contributed to such a wonderful Games in Birmingham in 2022 down to 10, was always going to be difficult given the financial constraints in 2026.
“We are encouraged by the CGF’s commitment to continue to stay close to the sports that have missed out, and we will do everything possible to support the reinstatement of table tennis from 2030.”
