A new initiative aimed at strengthening County Squads across the South West is set to kick off this year with the launch of the South West Training Camps. This exciting new program is designed to offer young Table Tennis players the opportunity to receive tailored coaching and develop their skills in a supportive environment.
Focused Coaching for Emerging Talent
The South West Training Camps will focus on young players nominated by their County Associations. Each County will select players they believe would benefit most from the specialised coaching, with an emphasis on those eager to progress in the sport. Whether players are aiming to compete at a higher level or simply looking to improve their technique, the camps are designed to support their growth.
One of the key priorities for the initiative is gender parity, ensuring equal opportunities for both male and female players. The program is aimed at fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where every young player has the chance to thrive.

Collaboration with Expert Coaches
A key figure in the launch of the South West Training Camps is Nick Davidson, a Level 3 Table Tennis coach, who will serve as the Head Coach for the program. Nick will work closely with coaches from each host club to deliver high-quality coaching and ensure that players receive the support they need to develop. In addition to helping young players, the program will also provide opportunities for the development of coaches involved.
“We’re not only focusing on improving individual skills, but also creating meaningful conversations about talent development and the future pathways for young players in the sport within the South West,” said Nick Davidson.

Addressing Key Challenges
As the program gets underway, organisers have identified several challenges, including the availability of venues with the required number of tables (ideally 12+), as well as the differences in opportunities available depending on geographical location. These are issue that will be closely monitored and where possible addressed throughout the pilot year.
Additionally, a Coaches Training Day is being planned for 10th May 2025 at the Cornwall Table Tennis Centre. This will be an opportunity for coaches to enhance their skills and knowledge as part of the ongoing professional development within the region. Further dates and locations are being planned.
Looking to the Future
The South West Training Camps is being enthusiastically supported by County Associations, Clubs and players. Ongoing feedback will be integral in shaping the future direction of the program.
“The South West Training Camps forms part of a wider programme to strengthen the Table Tennis for Juniors. We’re looking forward to working together with players and coaches to create new opportunities and help these young athletes reach their full potential,” said Amanda Leonard Table Tennis England -Area Manager – South West
As the program evolves, it aims to create a stronger network of Table Tennis players, coaches, and clubs, with the ultimate goal of building a robust talent pipeline for the future of the sport in the South West.
