Jasmin Wong earned a top-20 finish and Mari Baldwin was just outside at the Finlandia Open held over the weekend.
In the Women’s Singles, Baldwin, having got a bye through the first round, had an easy 2, 2, 1 win over Ingili Petersen of Greenland in the last 64, went out in the last 32, 3-0 (4, 5, 8) to Madelin Louanne of France.
Wong also had a first-round bye and then defeated Christine Kalvatn of Norway 3-1 (11-13, 11-9, 11-5, 11-4), before going out 3-2 (17-15, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9) to Marina Donner of Finland in the last 32.
In the bracket for 17th to 32nd places, Wong beat Finland’s Romana Betz in three games in the first round, while Baldwin lost 3-1 (12-10, 11-5, 5-11, 14-12) to Mia O’Rahilly Egan of Ireland.
Wong then lost 3-1 (11-9, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4) to Belgium’s Julie Van Hauwaert and 3-0 (11-6, 13-11, 11-9) to O’Rahilly Egan to end in 20th place.
Baldwin overcame Marziyya Nurmatova of Azerbaijan in three but was then defeated 3-1 (11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9) by Betz and ended in 22nd place.
In the Men’s Singles, Joe Marlor lost in the first round in three games to Georgios Kosmas of Greece. In the bracket for 65th to 96th, he started with a 3-2 (15-13, 9-11, 13-15, 11-8, 11-9) win over Aqqalu Nielsen on Greenland and then beat Iceland’s Thorbergur Palmarsson 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-2).
Defeat in four close games (11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 13-11) by Felix Thomassen of Norway put him in the bracket for 69th to 72nd and he started with a 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-7, 11-6) defeat to Vazir Aalaverdiyev of Azerbaijan. A loss to Birgir Ivarsson of Iceland by a 3-2 (8-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8) scoreline, left him in 72nd place.
None of the English players made it past the group stage in their respective under-21 competitions.
