British table tennis has been awarded increased UK Sport funding through to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The sport will receive £1,375,000 to build towards LA, an increase of 2% on the £1.35million received during the Paris 2024 cycle.
The funding is awarded to Table Tennis England to administer on behalf of GB Table Tennis and covers the performance pathway rather than any particular individuals.
British Para Table Tennis has been awarded £4,175,000, an increase of just under 10% on the £3,808,787 sum awarded during the lead-up to Paris 2024, where British athletes won two silver and three bronze medals.
Table Tennis England head of Performance Development Gavin Evans said: “We’re delighted to get this increase, which shows an aligned belief in our programme and our Olympic ambition of winning Great Britain’s first ever Olympic medal.
“We’re very grateful and I’d particularly like to thank Jack Mercer, our progression adviser at UK Sport, for his help in developing our system.
“We’re moving in the right direction and the next step is to become a world-class programme, and we’ll have continuous discussions with UK Sport to help us to do that.”
Table Tennis England Chief Executive Sally Lockyer said: “We’re delighted to have an increase in our funding for the Olympic cycle to LA 2028.
“I’d like to thank UK Sport, the National Lottery and Government for the investment which enables us to power our ambition to win Olympic medals.
“Alongside British Para Table Tennis, we’re proud to be part of the ecosystem of high-performing sports and look forward to continuing a positive and collaborative narrative to play our part in delivering world-class performance.”
The awards are part of a record UK Sport investment, with a total of £330m in Government and National Lottery funding set to benefit more than 50 sports as they embark on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games cycle.
Table tennis is on the list of Olympic Development Sports, as well as the Paralympic World Class Programme.
Today’s announcement comes following more than a year of planning with all the sports to understand their performance strategies and ambitions for LA.
Sally Munday, CEO of UK Sport, said: “It’s thanks to the unwavering support of the UK Government and our wonderful National Lottery players that we are able to announce this historic investment today, towards continuing to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments.
“The past few years have been tough for our sports with the delayed Tokyo Games and shortened Paris cycle, and we know finances remain under extreme pressure. We have looked to relieve some of this pressure through our investment today, however we know we must continue to innovate and collaborate, together, to grow a thriving sporting system that’s fit for the future.
“Huge credit to the leaders in our sports for all the hard work they’ve done, with us, over the past 18 months to put us in this brilliant position to be able to say we are ready to win well in the LA cycle and beyond.”
