On December 23, 2024, the Guildford table tennis community mourned the loss of John Diggens, a cherished figure who dedicated over six decades to the sport. John, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, left an indelible mark on the Guildford Table Tennis Association through his passion, commitment, and contributions to the local game.

John arrived in Guildford from his hometown of Colchester in 1961 and immediately immersed himself in the local table tennis scene, playing for the Cow and Gate team. Over the years, he represented Pegasus TTC and Bramley TTC in the Guildford League. However, his true legacy lies in the roles he played off the table.

Championing Youth Table Tennis

In 1967, John joined the Guildford Table Tennis Association’s management committee and quickly identified the need to attract more young players to the sport. His determination led to the establishment of a youth coaching scheme in 1970 at Bellfields Youth Centre. Alongside stalwarts Ted Woodgate and Dennis Baggott, John’s efforts transformed the local table tennis landscape.

The program was a resounding success, boasting over 50 members and a long waiting list. Under John’s leadership, the scheme produced numerous talented players who achieved success at local, county, and national levels. Notable names include Simon Vine, Steve Woodgate, Graham Russell, Kim Farminer, and Kerry East, all of whom began their journeys in John’s coaching system.

The program’s influence extended beyond the 1980s, continuing to thrive after John and his team handed over its management in 1983. Today, the coaching sessions, now held at Christ’s College, still attract over 50 attendees weekly—a testament to the enduring impact of John’s vision.

A Lifetime of Service

John’s contributions to the Guildford Table Tennis Association extended well beyond coaching. In later years, he remained a dedicated supporter, attending matches as a fan and continuing to play. He served as vice president of the association in 2002, became its archivist in 2008, and assumed the role of president in 2015.

His leadership and dedication helped sustain and strengthen the Guildford table tennis community well into the 21st century.

Remembering a Legend

John will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for his kindness, humility, and unwavering love for table tennis. His influence on the sport in Guildford has been profound, and his legacy will endure through the players and programs he inspired.
