Ralph Pattison agonisingly missed out on a European Youth Championships medal as he was beaten 4-3 in the quarter-finals by the fifth seed, having earlier knocked out the third seed.

The Harlow athlete (pictured above) was equal 15th in the rankings and duly arrived in the last 16 of the Cadet Boys’ Singles in Poland, with victories over Ukrainian and Czech opponents.

There, he faced Hungarian third seed Botond Varga and he kept up his good form with a superb 4-1 victory.

It meant victory over fifth seed Patryk Zyworonek of the host nation would give him at least a bronze medal, and he led 2-0 and 3-2 – and 5-2 in the decider – before eventually succumbing to an opponent who dashed to his corner and leapt into the arms of his coach after taking the decisive point.

In the Junior Boys’ Singles, Connor Green, ranked equal 30th, made it to the last 32, where he ran into second seed Hugo Deschamps of France, who proved too strong with a win in four straight.

Sienna Jetha, ranked 26th in the Cadet Girls’ Singles, was beaten in the last 64 by Serbia’s Jana Havela.

There is still GB interest, with second seed Anna Hursey of Wales having reached the semi-finals of the Junior Girls’ Singles, where she will face Romania’s third seed, Ioana Singeorzan, on Sunday.

All the remaining doubles pairs involving English athletes exited to seeded pairs, meaning England’s involvement in Gliwice is now at an end.

Green & Hursey, seeded sixth, reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Mixed, where they went out to the fourth seeds, Teodor Istrate of Romania & Nicole Arlia of Italy.

Istrate & compatriot Iulian Chirita, seeded third, were too strong for Louis Price and Switzerland’s Timothy Falconnier in the last 32 of the Junior Boys.

Pattison & Isaac Kingham got to the last 16 of the Cadet Boys, losing out to second seeds Petr Hodina (AUT) & Damian Floro (SVK) in four.

In the Cadet Girls, Jetha & Ella Pashley went out to third seeds Veronika Polakova (CZE) & Maria Berzosa (ESP) in the round of 32 while, at the same stage, Naomi Coker & Darcey Taylor of Wales were beaten by second seeds Nina Guo Zheng & Leana Hochart of France.

In the Cadet Mixed, it was the last 32 for Jetha & Pattison, and defeat again for the latter at the hands of Zyworonek & his partner Gaetane Bled of France, the third seeds. Kingham & Pashley went out at the same stage to Sandro Cavaille & Leana Hochart of France, seeded 12th.
