BATTS II romped to victory in the Senior British Clubs League Championship division, finishing a whopping 9pts clear of second-placed Ormesby II.

With a three-point lead going into the final weekend, it was BATTS’ to lose, with only Ormeau within striking distance.

But any notions of the Irish side closing the gap were blown away in the first round of Saturday’s play when ninth-placed Woodford Wells beat them 6-2.

Woodford won all four matches which went to a deciding game, including the first two as Vladimir Pandurevic beat Adam Faulkner and Bryan Kwan overcame Peadar Sheridan to give Woodford the perfect start.

Pandurevic later beat Sheridan in five and Emmanuel Kwesi Asante beat Faulkner in the closest of the lot – 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 15-13.

BATTS beat bottom-placed Wensum 7-1 to put one hand on the trophy, while the other first-round matches saw Ormesby beat Milton Keynes 5-3 – kick-starting a 100% weekend for the Middlesbrough club – while Nottingham and Wymondham had 6-2 wins over Perry Dale and Urban respectively.

So BATTS knew the title would be theirs with victory over Wymondham on Saturday afternoon, but it turned into a tough test.

BATTS took the lead as Joe Ferguson beat Umair Mauthoor in five (15-17, 11-8, 4-11, 11-2, 11-6), but Isaac kingham hit back as he defeated Jack Bennett 3-2 (6-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, 11-2).

Victories for Luc Miller and Djen Bakx over Shun Hei Chang and Israel Awolaja seemed to have restored order for the leaders, but again Wymondham hit back through a victory in five for Kingham over Ferguson and then, in four, for Mauthoor over Miller.

The match was evenly poised but Bennett ensured at least a draw for BATTS as he beat Awolaja in four, and Bakx clinched the title with a four-game triumph over Chang.

Ormeau were held to a 4-4 draw by Wensum, the bottom-placed side coming from 3-2 and 4-3 down to take a point, clinched by Wayne Mason’s 3-1 (12-10, 11-7, 6-11, 13-11) win over Thomas Earley.

Nottingham won 7-1 against Urban, and Ormesby beat Woodford Wells by the same score. It was 5-3 for Milton Keynes against Perry Dale.

If BATTS were out celebrating on Saturday, it did not show as they beat Nottingham 6-2 on Sunday morning, and ended their season with a 7-1 win over Milton Keynes.

The only two remaining questions were who would claim the runners-up spot and whether or not Wensum would get a solitary victory.

The answer to the second question was, unfortunately, no as they ended their season with a 7-1 defeat to Wymondham followed by a 6-2 reverse at the hands of Ormesby.

That result, coupled with an 8-0 win over crestfallen Ormeau in the penultimate round, meant Ormesby had done enough to finish in second, a point ahead of Wymondham and Ormeau.

Woodford Wells completed a good weekend for them with two wins on Sunday, 7-1 over Perry Dale and 5-3 over Urban.

In the averages, Ormeau’s Mat Ware was not in action on the final weekend and he finished top of the pile with 15 wins out of 16 for a strike-rate of 93.75%, ahead of Bakx, who had one win fewer from the same number of matches.
