Brighton head into their Senior British Club Leagues Premier Division title decider against Ormesby in form after a 7-0 win over Drumchapel Glasgow.
While the outcome of this match didn’t have any particular relevancy for the defending champions, their sets ratio meant a win over Ormesby on May 17th would be enough to retain the title anyway, this was a confidence-boosting win over the Scots, who will now finish bottom of the competition irrespective of how they fare against Fusion in the final round.
The whitewash isn’t a fair reflection of how this match went, with three of the seven sets going the distance. The killer for Drumchapel were the opening two matches, both of which they lost in five. Callum Evans couldn’t shake off Aaron McKibbin, who responded excellently to heavy defeats in the first and third ends to take the second and fourth. But Welsh star Evans ran away with the fifth.
Meanwhile, Danny Bajwa had a real tussle with paralympic star Will Bayley MBE and held a 2-1 lead, only for Bayley to storm back and take the final two ends in front of a delighted home crowd.
Evans and Andersson crucially won the first two ends of doubles in deuce against McKibbin and Victor Guang Shi, taking the match in the fourth.
Victory was then wrapped up by Andersson, who overcame the explosive Guang Shi in four ends. Evans then beat Bajwa in straight ends.
Andersson returned to take out McKibbin 3-1, shaking off a third-end loss to make it 6-0 before the game was wrapped up by Bayley, who certainly gave the home crowd something to get excited about as he produced a sensational fightback to defeat Guang Shi. Having lost the first two ends 11-7, he looked up against it. But that trademark spirit and never give up attitude saw him rally superbly, takr the third, overcome a nervy fourth end, then race into a strong lead to take the fifth.
At the end, he even found time to celebrate for the YouTube cameras!
Brighton now make the trip for the title decider with Ormesby on May 17th. Drumchapel’s inferior sets ratio means even victory over Fusion wouldn’t be enough to see them go above them in the table.
