China kept up their unbeatable record in Olympic Games team competitions as they defeated Sweden 3-0 to win the Men’s Team gold medal in Paris, followed by a 3-0 victory over Japan in the Women’s Team final (pictured above).

It was not all one-sided, however, particularly in the men’s match, where all three matches went to a deciding fifth game. Beginning with the doubles, Wang Chuqin & Ma Long won 3-2 (8-11, 11-4, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7) against Kristian Karlsson & Anton Kallberg.

The second match was a repeat of the singles gold medal encounter between Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregard and Fan won once again, by a 3-2 (10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 11-5) margin.

Karlsson then came from 2-0 down to force a decider against Wang, saving a gold medal point in the third. But world No 1 Wang, who was beaten by Moregard in the last 32 of the singles, won it 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 10-12, 11-2.

The bronze medal match saw hosts France set the venue jumping as they staved off a fightback by Japan to win 3-2.

Simon Gauzy & Alexis Lebrun won the doubles in four against Hiroto Shinozuka & Shunsuke Togami and singles bronze medallist Felix Lebrun then defeated Tomokazu Harimoto 12-10 in the fifth. But Japan hauled themselves level as Togami beat Alexis Lebrun and Harimoto defeated Gauzy, both in four.

It was left to Felix Lebrun to bag his second bronze of the competition as he defeated Shinozuka 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 13-11).

It was also 3-0 in the women’s final, although China had to come from 2-1 and 9-5 down in the opening doubles, Chen Meng & Wang Manyu eventually beating Hina Hayata & Miwa Harimoto 3-2 (9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10).

Sun Yingsha then beat Miu Hirano 3-0 (13-11, 11-6, 11-6) in the second match, and Wang clinched gold – the 300th in China’s summer Games history – by defeating Harimoto 3-1 (12-14, 12-10, 11-7, 11-6).

The women’s podium

In the bronze medal match, it was a 3-0 victory for South Korea over Germany to complete an Asian lock-out of the podium.

Jeon Jihee & Shin Yubin took the doubles 3-2 (11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8) against Yuan Wan & Xiaona Shan. Lee Eunhye overcame Annett Kaufmann 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-2) and Jeon sealed it with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-6) win over Shan.
