China won the first available gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games – and completed the full set of available golds – as they took the Mixed Doubles title.

Top seeds Wang Chuqin & Sun Yingsha defeated North Korean pair Ri Jong Sik & Kim Kum Yong 4-2 (11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8) in the gold medal match.

The discipline was the only gold missing from China’s collection – having only been introduced at the last Olympics in Tokyo, where it was won by Japan’s Jun Mizutani & Mima Ito. It takes their gold medal total to 33 out of a possible 38 since table tennis was first including in the Olympics in 1988.

The North Korean pair were unexpected finalists – ranked 16th out of the 16 pairs competing in Paris, they began by eliminating second seeds Tomokazu Harimoto & Hina Hayata in the first round, and continued their run to the final.

South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon & Shin Yubin secured the bronze medal with a dominant 4-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-7, 14-12) victory over Wong Chun Ting & Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong.
