The Cadet Boys were the best finishers for England at the European Youth Championships in Belgrade, ending in a share of 11th position.
The Junior Girls were 15th, Junior Boys 16th and Cadet Girls 25th as the team competitions came to an end on Sunday. The individual categories begin on Monday.
The Cadet Boys’ line-up of Jakub Piwowar, Larry Trumpauskas (pictured above) and Ralph Pattison started the positional play-offs with a 3-0 win over Turkey, but a 3-0 defeat to Hungary, in which Trumpauskas lost the opening match 14-12 in the fifth, meant they had to target a top-10 rather than top-eight finish.
That quest started well as they defeated Belgium with three 3-0 victories, but a 3-1 defeat to Germany, in which Piwowar & Pattison had a match point in the doubles to put England 2-1 up, left them in a share of 11th with Spain.
England Junior Girls (Mari Baldwin, Jasmin Wong, Anaya Patel, Amy Marriott) started the play-offs with a 3-2 win over Hungary, Wong notching a double including a comeback 3-2 (9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7) win over Irisz Laskai to seal victory after England had trailed 1-0 and 2-1.
Defeats to Sweden and Portugal, both by 3-0, saw England in the bracket for 13th to 16th, where they started with a 3-1 defeat to Lithuania.
They finished on a high and claimed 15th place thanks to a 3-2 win over Serbia as Baldwin, Marriott and Wong each picked up a victory to make Reka Bezeg’s double for Serbia redundant.
The Junior Boys (Connor Green, Louis Price, Ben Piggott, Felix Thomis) beat Portugal 3-2 in a monumental first play-off match in which the first four matches went the distance.
Wins for Green and Thomis twice put England in front, but Price was beaten 11-8 and 11-9 in his deciding sets, leaving the score at 2-2. Green then defeated Bernardo Pinto in four to seal victory.
A 3-0 defeat to France was followed by a 3-1 reverse to Sweden, in which Piggott notched England’s point, and then a 3-0 defeat to Czech Republic.
That left England to face Netherlands for 15th and 16th positions, but it was a 3-1 defeat despite Green’s opening 3-2 (14-16, 11-9, 9-11, 15-13, 11-7) victory over Gabrielius Camara.
A narrow 3-2 defeat to Italy in the groups had left England’s Cadet Girls (Sienna Jetha, Maliha Baig, Ella Pashley) playing in round-robin the 25th-30th bracket.
Victories were notched over Montenegro (3-0), Estonia (3-1), Switzerland (3-1) and Norway (3-0), and a 3-1 defeat to Sweden saw England finish in 26th place.
