All four English players won their opening singles at the European Championships in Munich yesterday.
Charlotte Bardsley (pictured above) impressed in coming from 2-0 down to defeat world No 127 Nicole Arlia of Italy in five, while it was also five games for Tom Jarvis, who was never behind but edged a decider 11-9 against Andrei Putuntica of Moldova.
It was three straight for Tin-Tin Ho against Sanne De Hoop of the Netherlands, while Sam Walker won in four against Marko Jevtovic of Serbia.
All four athletes have another group match ove the next couple of days as they bid to reach the main draw. Liam Pitchford is already exempt to that stage, as ninth seed.
Pitchford & Jonathan Groth of Denmark got through their first match in the Men’s Doubles in three straight against a mixed Macedonia/Kosovo pair.
However, Pitchford & Ho, and Jarvis & Bardsley, went out of the mixed doubles. Jarvis & Ho won their preliminary match against a Greek pair, but were then eliminated by 10th seeds Robert Gardos & Sofia Polcanova of Austria in the last 32.
Pitchford & Ho, seeded 16, came in at the same stage but were knocked out by the 27th-ranked couple, Samuel Kulczycki & Katarzyna Wegrzyn of Poland, in five.
The event is being covered on ETTU TV and on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website. A BBC table tennis stream is due to be on air today from 1.40-5pm.
