Tin-Tin Ho, Tom Jarvis and Sam Walker all made winning starts to their singles campaigns as the European Championships opened in Austria today.
Playing in the qualifying groups, the two men were first on court and Jarvis was the first to put a ‘W’ in the bank as he saw off Pert Marten Lehtlaan of Estonia with relative ease in three straight.
Jarvis (WR 206) had a much tougher task against Nandor Ecseki of Hungary (WR 302), a doubles champion at WTT Feeder Manchester this year, in his final group.
It went the distance and Jarvis led 1-0 and 2-1 but saw his opponent narrowly win the fourth and fifth games, both 11-9.
Walker (WR 281) needed four games to beat Eitay Shushan of Israel in the first of his three group matches, which he followed up with a win in three straight over Mykyta Zavada of Ukraine (WR 210). Walker finishes against Rune Schultz of Greenland tomorrow.
Ho (WR 186) blitzed past Faye Leggett of Scotland for the loss of only six points in her first Women’s Singles group match and followed up with another comfortable three-game win over Alexandra Chiriacova of Moldova. She has her final group match against Sara Tokic (WR 283) of Slovenia tomorrow.
Connor Green (WR 407) made a good start on his major event debut in the Senior ranks, taking the first game 12-10 against world No 150 Fanbo Meng of Germany. Green is back on court tomorrow, against Vladimir Petkov of Bulgaria, who is ranked outside the top 1,000.
Group winners and runners-up go through to the preliminary round.
In the Mixed Doubles, Walker & Ho made it safely through their first match, against Vladislav Ursu & Alexandra Chiriacova of Moldova to seal a place in the main draw.
They will face ninth seeds Samuel Arpas & Barbora Balazova of Slovakia in the last 32 at 4.40pm UK time on Wednesday.
At the same stage at 5.20pm, Liam Pitchford & Anna Hursey of Wales, the 16th seeds, will play Italy’s Matteo Mutti & Debora Vivarelli.
