Three English pairs got to the last 16 as the action at the ISF World Schools Gymnasiade ended with the doubles competitions today.
Every English pair progressed from the groups – with Rhys Davies & Naphong Boonyaprapa in first place and Bertie Kelly & Olly Cornish, Erin Green & Amy Marriott and Samadhi Udamulla & Lauren Loosemore in second place.
In round one, Kelly & Cornish beat a strong USA team 3-2, while Green and Marriott were comfortable winners over the pair from Ukraine. Loosemore and Udamulla put up a strong fight against the Croatians before going down 3-1.
In the round of 16, all three remaining pairs were defeated – Davies and Boonyaprapa losing to an American pair, while Kelly & Cornish and Green & Marriott went out at the hands of Chinese Taipei – the boys by a 3-1 margin and the girls 3-0.
At the end of a hard week, the English players can reflect on having gained valuable international experience against some world-class players.
