Ho was first in action, against Sara Tokic of Slovenia and it went to five as Tokic fought to stay in the competition. Ho saved five game points in the first but lost it 13-11, but she twice fought back from a game down to level.

The decider saw Ho come from 4-1 down at her timeout to lead 6-5, but four points in a row for Tokic saw her take a big step towards winning the game 11-7.

That result left Ho, Tokic and Alexendra Chiriacova of Moldova all with two victories – but Ho topped the group on countback, ahead of Chiriacova.

She will play Shuohan Men of The Netherlands at 6.25pm UK time today on Table 2.

Having lost his first match to higher-ranked Fanbo Meng of Germany, Green needed a win to get into the next stage, and he obliged against Vladimir Petkov of Bulgaria.

It was not all plain-sailing – Green took his timeout at 7-6 in the first, having been called for a service fault, and also missed a match point in the third, before prevailing 3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 11-13, 11-2).

Green (WR 407) now faces Finland’s Benedek Olah (WR 95) in the preliminary round at 7.05pm UK time on Table 5.

Walker’s match against Rune Schultz of Greenland did not unduly tax him as he won in three one-sided games to finish the group stage with a perfect record of three wins.

The next challenge for Walker (WR 281) is against unranked Itay Avivi of Israel, at 8.25pm UK time on Table 10. At the same time on Table 5, Jarvis takes on Greece’s Ioannis Sgouropoulos, ranked five places above him in the world at 201.

This afternoon, two doubles pair including English players booked their places in the main draw.

Ho & Debora Vivarelli of Italy defeated Danish pair Jocefina Haagensen & Maja Hansen in four to get into the last 32 of the Women’s Doubles, while Green & Hakan Isik of Turkey won in three over Pert Marten Lehtlaan & Madis Moos of Estonia to reach the same stage of the Men’s Doubles.
