Kacper Piwowar added singles silver to doubles gold at the WTT Youth Contender Zrenjanin, and Wales’ Anna Hursey took the Under-19 Girls’ Singles title.
Piwowar, who won the Under-15 Mixed Doubles alongside Natalia Wszolek of Poland earlier in the competition, powered through to the final of the singles in the same age bracket.
Seeded three, he did not drop a game until the semi-finals, where he defeated second seed Mark Gergely of Hungary in four.
He faced another Hungarian, fifth seed Lenard Szabo, in the final but, despite taking the first game, was unable to make it a double gold at the event.
Abraham Sellado was top seed for the age group but went out in the quarter-finals, 3-2 (11-8, 11-6, 4-11, 9-11, 11-8) to seventh seed Miroslav Schmidt of Bulgaria. Dimitar Dimitrov reached the last 32, where he was defeated by Gergely.
GB pathway player Hursey, seeded second in the Under-19 Girls’ Singles and ranked No 27 on the world Junior list, duly reached the final, not dropping a game until the semi-finals, where she fell behind to third seed Josephina Neumann of Germany (WR 37) but recovered to win 3-1.
In the final, Hursey faced European Junior champion and top seed Bianca Mei-Rosu of Romania (WR 24). But Hursey took charge and never let her opponent back in, winning 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-6) to take the title. Taking three successive points from 9-8 down in the second was the key moment in the match.
Home crowds will get the chance to see Hursey compete – alongside all the top English players – at WTT Feeder Manchester later this month. Click here to get tickets.
Tianer Yu, ranked No 106 on the world Junior list, reached the quarter-finals where she lost to Neumann in four.
Rohan Dani reached the last 16 of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, where he was defeated by Brin Vovk of Slovenia, ranked six places above him at No 144 on the Junior world rankings.
