On September 15, 2024, thirteen table tennis players from as far afield as Ipswich and Scotland gathered at Blackpool Sports Centre to take part in the Level 1 Umpires Course. The course offered participants a comprehensive introduction to the skills required to officiate at both local and national tournaments.

The attendees, who represented six different clubs, two leagues, a university, and even the British Army, spent the morning delving into the key rules, regulations, and scenarios essential for effective umpiring. Led by seasoned officials Brian Jackson and Tom Purcell, the sessions covered everything from scoring intricacies to handling unusual match situations.

The success of the course was highlighted by the fact that several of the newly trained umpires have already been invited to officiate at the upcoming STIGA Women & Girls 1 Star on September 28 and the STIGA Blackpool Junior 2 Star on September 29, 2024. These events will provide them with a valuable opportunity to further refine their skills in a real-world setting.
