Andrew Baggaley joined Sam Walker in the main draw but injury ruined David McBeath’s chances at the Belgium Open.

Baggaley, now ranked at 437 in the world, overcame 324th-ranked Japanese Shunsuke Togami in a titanic battle which saw him recover from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 and then get forced into a decider, which he won 11-8.

Baggaley next plays 22nd seed Felipe Olivares of Chile, while 15th seed Walker plays Vildan Gadiev of Russia.

McBeath had to pull out of his match against Russian Lev Katsman through injury, while trailing 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-5). The injury also meant he and Walker could not play their second doubles match, having got through the first preliminary round earlier in the day.

Tom Jarvis gave a good account of himself against South Korea’s An Jaehyun, ranked 141 places above him in the world at No 136, with only a handful of points to separate the pair over six games.

Nevertheless, Jarvis made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser when the withdrawal of the Slovenian players, two of whom were seeded, created space in the draw. And he landed a plum tie against top seed Omar Assar of Egypt, the world No 39.

Jarvis is back in action in the last 64 of the under-21s tomorrow, against Li Hsin-Yang of Chinese Taipei.

In the women’s doubles, Tin-Tin Ho & Charlotte Carey were knocked out in a decider by Chantal Mantz & Wan Yuan of Germany in the second preliminary round, while Maria Tsaptsinos & Emily Bolton went out at the first hurdle.

Ho enters the Women’s Singles in the last 64 on Thursday when she takes on Sweden’s Filippa Bergand.
