Bournemouth-based Sophie Barcsai won gold at the Hungarian U11, U13 & U15 Open.

Ten-year-old Barcsai, who finished fifth at the U11 Stiga European Masters last year, was in superb form in the U11 singles. Representing Hungary, she dropped only two sets throughout the competition.

Having won her group, Barcsai beat Sophie Schirm of Germany 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-2) in the last 16 and then defeated Johanna Petery of Hungary 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-1) in the quarter-finals.

In the last four Barcsai, who trains at Waterside TTC in Southampton, overcame Natalia Szucs of Hungary 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-8) and she sealed the gold medal with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-6) victory over another Hungarian, Nora Dohoczki.

In the U13 Girls’ Team event, Barcsai represented Hungary B alongside Orsolya Jakab and the girls won their group and went on to reach the quarter-finals. There, they were beaten 3-2 by Lithuania, despite Barcsai winning her two singles matches – 3-0 (12-10, 11-5, 12-10) against Lukrecija Juchnaite and 3-1 (11-13, 11-9, 15-13, 11-8) against Gabija Abaraviciute.
