Chelmsford & District: Lowman hits heights

Promoted Danbury B have made a very good start to their division one campaign. With Sam Lowman leading the way they scored their third win of the season, beating Chelmsford C 7-3.

Lowman, with an impressive 80% record, won his three singles beating Waseem Qureshi 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7), Mike Johnston 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-7) and Wiktor Delimat 3-1 (11-8, 12-14, 11-4, 11-4).

Danbury A also impressed and they beat Writtle A 9-1. Father and son duo Gary and Daniel Young were both undefeated. Daniel beat Lee McHugh 3-2 (11-8, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10) in the clash of the night. Ryan Pitt pushed Gary hard before succumbing 3-2 (11-9, 3-11, 12-10, 8-11, 7-11).

Danbury A (represented by Eric Green, Steve Whiteley and Dave Richardson this time) also beat Liberal 7-3, a match which rather uniquely featured 10 games that were decided by 3-0 margins. Whiteley scored his first full-house of the season with three good wins. He beat Richard Jennings (11-7, 11-9, 11-9), Simon Webber (11-5, 11-7, 11-9) and Andy Huckson (11-1, 11-5, 11-8).

Leaders Maldon A made it six wins out of six. Two times Chelmsford Men’s Singles champion Alex Abbott was again their leading light and he downed the challenges of Casey Cross 3-1 (11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9) and James Denyer 3-1 (9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9). Abbott has a perfect record of 18 wins out of 18.

Galleywood A scored their second win of the season – a narrow 6-4 victory over Chelmsford B. No player stayed undefeated and Peter Barrett and Steve Kerns (for Galleywood) and Rob Shrimpton and Simon Jarvis (for Chelmsford) all won twice. Barrett outlasted Shrimpton over five action packed ends (11-4, 7-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8) but he missed out against the hard-hitting Jarvis (9-11, 7-11, 11-5, 4-11).

Chelmsford A ran out 7-3 winners over Rawreth. Newcomer Eren Gozcu made an immediate impact with a 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 win over Liam Squirrell – the first loss that Squirrell has suffered this season. Squirrell also had his work cut out against Casey Cross falling 2-0 behind. He eventually came through to win in five ends – 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-2.

Danbury stalwart Tony Forster produced a great performance as he led Danbury D to a 7-3 win over Hatfield Peverel A in division two. He beat Gareth Davies 3-1 (11-2, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6), Julie Johnson 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-8) and Neil Freeman 3-2 (9-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 12-10).

Danbury D lead the table after six games. Second placed Maldon B have a game in hand and they drew 5-5 with Writtle B. Ciaran Whelan was undefeated and his trio of wins included a 3-1 (11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3) victory against Phil Smith.

Maldon B also defeated Hatfield Peverel A 6-4. Whelan was again the top player. Mervyn Perriman made his mark with a last-gasp 3-2 (11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10) victory against Neil Freeman. The match between Writtle C and Danbury D finished all square at 5-5. Gary Ward was unbeaten for Writtle whilst Neil Want and Tim Cramphorn both won twice for Danbury D.

Writtle D jumped into third place in division three. Trevor Collin was unbeaten as they saw off Danbury G 8-2. Nicky Reece-Ford won twice for the losers with wins over Peter Layzell and Colin Barham.

Hatfield Peverel C, led by an undefeated Nick Duce, ran out 6-4 winners against Danbury J. Duce completed his hat-trick by defeating Dave Goody 3-1 (7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4).

No one player managed to dominate in the match between Danbury H and Writtle D. However, no player went home empty-handed either. Danbury H emerged as 6-4 winners after Eamon Hall and Allan Steel both won twice. David Meah picked up two wins for Writtle and this included a last-gasp 3-2 (11-9, 11-4, 4-11, 7-11, 11-9) victory over Hall.

Danbury E are second and they ran out 7-3 winners against Danbury F. David Gatheral (12 wins out of 12) held his side together with three wins. He completed his hat-trick with a fine 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2) victory over Steve Noble.

Writtle F moved off the bottom of the table in division four by beating OCs G 7-3. Ian Hockley led the way with a hat-trick and he completed his evening by beating David Bishop – the best of the OCs G players – 3-1 (11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4).

Second-placed OCs F had Richard Upson to thank as they beat Chelmsford H 6-4. Upson had to work hard for all three of his wins. He beat Andy Swales 3-0 (11-7, 13-11, 14-12), James Donald 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10) and Sarah Austin 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9).

Two matches finished tied at 5-5. Amanda Hogger beat Ron Salton 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-7) to earn OCs G a share of the points against Galleywood B. Maldon D came back from 5-3 down to level against Chelmsford F. Garry Eames defeated Martin Hiskey 3-0 (11-4, 17-15, 11-5) to secure the draw in the last game of the night.

OCs H were the week’s big winners in division five. Adrian North, Mike Lucy and Steve Pratt were all undefeated as they overcame Hatfield Peverel E 10-0. Pratt fought back from 2-0 to beat Phil West 3-2 (6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7).

Teamwork enabled Writtle E to beat Danbury K 7-3. Alan Offord, Malcolm Storey and Neil Thompson all won twice. Thompson did well to beat Denis Balic (who won twice for Danbury) 3-2 (11-6, 10-12, 8-11, 11-7, 11-1).

Highwood B (Frank Neill, Russell Downton and Francis Whitbread) ran out 8-2 winners over Buttsbury. Four games were decided in the fifth end and Highwood won three of them. Neill completed his hat-trick with a fifth end win over Tomasz Krolikowski (11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 12-14, 11-7).

ARU won their third match of the season – a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Hatfield Peverel D. ARU won four games in the fifth end. Mubarak Sulaiman completed his hat-trick with a 3-2 (3-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8) victory against Gary Simmonds.

Danbury Dragons are setting a storming pace in Chelmsford Junior League division 1A. Ewan Hynd and Sam Mortimer-Ford ran out 5-0 winners over Chelmsford Rhinos. 29 points out of 30 tells its own story.

Chelmsford Pumas are second, and they also won 5-0. Joachin Mapes and Saul Chivers were both undefeated. Mapes had to work hard to beat Oliver Cheung 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8).

Chelmsford Jaguars were 4-1 winners over Chelmsford Rhinos. Nyree Marsh led the way with wins over James Killeeen (11-7, 11-6, 11-5) and Nicholas Grace (10-12, 11-5, 11-1, 11-2).

Chelmsford Cougars defeated Chelmsford Pumas 3-2, and with two games in hand on the Pumas they should move up the table in due course. Sudheep Kamma impressed by beating Saul Chivers 3-1 (11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 15-13) and Joachin Mapes 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 13-11, 11-9).

Danbury Demons won their fourth and fifth games of the season. They beat Chelmsford Falcons 4-1 in division 1B. Alex Porter won twice for the Demons and he retained his 100% singles record (six wins out of six). Danbury Demons also beat Chelmsford Tigers 5-0. Jenson Davis and Elliot Gardiner were both undefeated.

It was a bad week for the Falcons who also lost a hard-fought match 5-0 to Chelmsford Panthers. Malachi O’Leary and George Spicer were both undefeated. George Spicer emerged as a winner against Ben Pickwick after five intense games (13-11, 11-9, 5-11, 9-11, 11-7).

Division 1C produced two closely fought games. Chelmsford Eagles (Nathan Tew and Nikita Tkachuk) were 3-2 winners against Danbury Griffins. Tkachuk won both of his singles 3-0, beating Dominic Kirk (11-8, 11-4, 11-6) and Adam Thirkettle (11-7, 11-7, 13-11).

Danbury Griffins also won 3-2. Callum Caldwell won twice as they beat Chelmsford Wildcats. Caldwell beat Alesha Ellis-Austin 3-1 (7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9) and Georgina Riches 3-1 (11-13, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5).

OCs Lions lead the way in division 1D. Tom Bird was undefeated as they overcame Danbury Devils 4-1. Bird led the way with wins over Toby Restall (11-7, 11-6, 11-9) and Ewan Sturrock (11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6).

OCs Lions also beat Buttsbury Bees 4-1. Josh Peasgood led the way with wins over Oscar Hutt (12-10, 14-12, 11-9) and Henry Gothard (11-6, 11-6, 11-7).

Danbury Devils were in turn 4-1 winners. They beat Chelmsford Elephants. Lotte Mills picked up two wins, including 3-1 against Luv Goel (11-5, 12-14, 11-5, 12-10).

Buttsbury Badgers beat Chelmsford 5-0. Ronnie Palmer and Zachary Samuels were both undefeated.
