Minda’s hat-trick seals draw for Maldon A

If this week’s results are anything to go by, the battle to avoid relegation from the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League could well be one of the closest on record. All three matches this week ended in 5-5 draws.

Minda Sinkus’s hat-trick of wins wasn’t enough to enable last year’s Champions Maldon A to beat Bocking. Maldon’s Dave Bassett impressed by beating Paul Davison 3-1. ECC A and Writtle A couldn’t be separated in their match whilst Chelmsford A drew with OCs A. The formbook counted for little as Chelmsford’s Peter Barrett succumbed to Scott Dowsett 3-1 and then hit back by defeating Peter Hayden and Terry Dowsett.

The leaders Hatfield Peverel B continue to impress in Division Two. Andrew Halling won his three singles as they beat ECC C 8-2. Steve Buer won twice and this included a last gasp 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 7-11, 16-14 win over Colin Blore.

ECC B’s Simon Webber, Gary Brignall and Ken James all won twice as they beat Liberal 6-4. Six games were decided in the fifth end and ECC won four of them. Simon Webber got the better of Barry Pritchard 11-4, 13-11, 8-11, 5-11, 13-11 to seal his side’s victory in the last game of the evening. ECC B also drew 5-5 with Elmtree Excalibur C. Debby Auvache impressed for her new club (ECC B) by beating both Richard Hiskey and Bill Smith.

Elsewhere, second-placed  Elmtree Excalibur B (Gary Cattermole, Mark Smith and Peter Mynard) turned in a very strong performance as they hammered Chelmsford C 10-0.

Danbury C did well to beat ECC D 6-4 in Division Three as ECC’s Richard Storey won his three singles. Ken Sheard and Mo Hardy also both won twice for Danbury C. ECC D missed out 6-4 against Danbury F. Dave Marsh’s three singles victories tipped the game in Danbury’s favour.

League stalwart Norman Hayes led Danbury H to an 8-2 win over EPHQ in Division Four. Hayes completed an excellent evening’s work by getting the better of Ian Hockley 11-7, 11-6, 4-11, 11-6 in the last game of the evening. Danbury G shaded the match 6-4 against ECC F. Brian Ellis, Jean Chasmer and Dave Powell all won twice to counter Peter Sun’s full-house.

The leaders Chelmsford F were the big winners in Division Five. Richard Upson (three wins), Richard Baxter (three wins) and Mike Pitt (two wins) all played their part as they beat OCs E 9-1.

Chelmsford H had Daniel Thomas and Jacqui Smith undefeated as they overcame OCs H 6-4. Jacqui Smith turned in a five-star performance to overcome Charlie Mariner by the unusual score-line of 11-13, 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 11-1.

Felsted Royal British Legion picked up their first two wins of the Season in the CLICK League. Nicholas Butler was unbeaten as they defeated Chelmsford M 4-1 whilst Ashley Butler, Nicholas Butler and Alex Pinto all played their part in their 4-1 win over Chelmsford L. The Felsted team found ECC G to be a tougher proposition and they lost this one 4-1. Ben Clifford beat both Ashley Butler and Matthew Laws and Nathan Blore and Ben Clifford won a very close doubles encounter by beating Butler and Laws 6-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 14-12.

ECC G also beat Chelmsford L 5-0 and it was again the Doubles that caused the most excitement. This time Ben Clifford and Nathan Blore beat Callum Day and Luke Jones 7-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7, 14-12.
