Julie Vansertima on top form for Chelmsford B

Chelmsford B have jumped into third place in Division Two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and with Chelmsford A currently occupying the bottom place in Division One the Chelmsford Club will be hoping that their second team can go onto finish in second position. 18 times Chelmsford Ladies Champion Julie Vansertima led them to a 6-4 win over ECC C scoring wins over James Hicks (3-0), Colin Blore (3-1) and Bryn Thomas (3-0). ECC B were also 6-4 winners, beating Chelmsford C. Gary Brignall and Simon Webber were both undefeated in their singles. In a match where no one player remained undefeated Elmtree Excalibur C beat ECC C 6-4. Elmtree’s Ian Rattray and Nigel Lamb and ECC’s James Hicks and Alistair Hill all won twice. Alistair Hill pipped Dave Moles 11-13, 10-12, 11-3, 11-8, 12-10 in the closest game of the evening. Writtle B were led by Matthew Brown to a 7-3 win over Hatfield Peverel A. Brown completed his hat-trick with a 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9 win over John Parodi.

Bocking stay top in Division One and it was Paul Davison who led them to a 6-4 win with three singles victories against a strong Writtle A team. Davison scored wins over new signing Peter Radford (3-1), Paul Cuming (3-1) and Bruce Kettle (3-0). ECC A who have slipped down the table of late recorded a welcome fourth win of the season over Chelmsford A, by a 7-3 margin. Mark Mulley’s hat-trick ensured that they stayed in charge. Mulley had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Darren Richardson 4-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11 in the last game of the evening. Maldon B had Paul Sayer firing on all cylinders as they beat Writtle A 6-4. Dave Bassett also impressed with his 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 victory over Paul Cuming. Elmtree Graphics A called up John Holland from their second side and he joined forces with Gary Baker and Nigel Lamb to inflict a 8-2 defeat on Chelmsford A.

Danbury B continue to set a red hot pace in Division Three and they made it ten wins out of ten this week. Tim Pulham won his three singles as they beat Danbury F 8-2 and Neil Want and Gordon Gatherall both won twice. Pulham was locked at two games apiece with Richard Allen but in the third game he stormed clear to win 11-7, 15-17, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2. Rawreth had Mike Worship unbeaten as they defeated Elmtree Excalibur D 6-4 whilst Mo Hardy’s three wins enabled Danbury C to beat Danbury E 7-3. Ivan Chaplin prevailed 11-8, 7-11,11-9, 8-11,12-10 against Dave Hancox in the closest game of the night. ECC D came out on the right side of a 6-4 match against Danbury F after Richard Storey had won his three singles. Storey scored his third win of the evening with an 11-6,11-3,12-10 victory over the previously undefeated Dave Marsh.

ECC F secured back-to-back wins in division four to climb into fifth place. Alastair Hill led them to a 7-3 win over Chelmsford E whilst Peter Sun, Mohammed Mohseni and Arthur Clark all won twice as they beat Elmtree Excalibur E 7-3. None of the ECC players were able to beat John Marshall. Elmtree Excalibur E also drew with Writtle C and John Marshall was again the top player. He stayed undefeated although he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Andy Fox 11-8, 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9 in his opening singles. Danbury H had Norman Hayes to thank as they beat Danbury G 6-4 whilst third-placed Chelmsford E’s Adam Pitt remained undefeated in his side‘s 8-2 win over Hatfield Peverel D. Pitt scored a fine 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 win over Keith Cullen.

Danbury K were the week’s big winners in division five. Kevin Willis, Philip Crudginton and John Knights picked up all nins singles as they beat OCs H 9-1. A two-player Chelmsford G side did well to beat Elmtree Excalibur F 7-3. Father and daughter duo Ian and Sarah Austin carried all before them. Sarah Austin held on to get the better of Wiktor Delimat 11-4, 7-11, 7-11, 11-8 12-10.

Second-placed OCs J (Harvey Russell and Steven Turner) beat Chelmsford M 5-0 in the CLICK League. Russell eased home in the fifth end 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-6 against Steven Davenport. Writtle D had Peter Widley to thank as they beat Felsted 4-1. Widley prevailed by a nerve-tingling 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10 margin against Ashley Butler.
