Burton hat-trick floors Danbury A

2010 Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Two-Down Singles Champion Robbie Burton is known for his exceptional “dig” returns. No one chops the ball harder in the Chelmsford League and he was on top form as he led OCs B to an eye-catching 9-1 win over Danbury B in division one. With Martin Cole making a successful return to action after a nine year break – (is it really that on long ?) and also winning his three singles it was definitely OCs’ night. Reserve Lee McHugh was Danbury’s only winner. He beat Steve Northcott 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9. Maldon B had an undefeated Alex Abbott to thank as they drew 5-5 with OCs A. Brandon Crouchman and Peter Hayden both won twice for OCs with Brandon doing well to beat Hamish Innes 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9. A new look Bocking have made a good start and they hammered ECC A 9-1. Kevin Gowlett and Paul Davison were both undefeated whilst Jon Hill only missed out against Lucy Wang. Hill did well to beat David Evans 11-7, 12-10, 11-13, 13-11.

A very strong Elmtree Excalibur B side of Garry Cattermole, John Holland and Phil Smith turned in an exceptional performance to beat Elmtree Excalibur C 10- 0 in division two. Garry Cattermole beat George Pavitt 6-11, 10-12, 13-11, 12- 10, 11-9 in an evenly fought opening game and thereafter it was Elmtree Excalibur B who called the shots. ECC B (Gary Brignall, Simon Webber and Debby Auvache) were equally dominant against ECC C and they also won 10-0 as Bryn Thomas, Richard Storey and Colin Blore felt the full onslaught of the inform ECC B team. The match between Chelmsford C and Chelmsford B was more evenly contested and finished as a 5-5 draw. Robert Shrimpton won his three singles for the C side to counter the two wins that Alistair Piper picked up for the B team. Duncan Elloy just prevailed 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 9-11, 13-11 in the closest game of the night. Hatfield Peverel B had both Chris Buer and Andrew Halling unbeaten as they beat Chelmsford B 9-1. Mike Johnston was on target for Chelmsford and he picked up his side’s sole win downing the challenge of Steve Buer 9-11, 14-12, 11-13, 11-9, 11-8.

Danbury B caught the eye in division three. Tim Pulham and Neil Want were both undefeated as they beat Rawreth 8-2. Rawreth had to battle hard for their two games. Dale Gutterdidge beat Glen Laing 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7, 13-11 and a luckless Laing also missed out against Paul Churn 11-9, 5-11, 11-1, 5-11, 11-13. Danbury F had Dave Marsh to thank  as they drew 5-5 with OCs C whilst John Watts picked up two wins for the OCs side. ECC D came out on top against OCs C 7-3 with Peter Layzell leading the way. He beat all three OCs players – Adrian North, John Watts and Jack Crook.

In division four Elmtree Excalibur B  did well to beat Hatfield  Peverel D 8-2. Rod Maclennan led the way with three wins and he was well supported by Melanie Bonnett and John Marshall who both won twice. Hatfield Peverel E drew 5-5 with Danbury H. Dave Carter won his customary three games for Hatfield Peverel with Kevin Willis (two wins), Janet Pannell (one win) and Peter Orriss (one win) responding for Danbury. Writtle C had Frank Neill and Brian Steward undefeated in singles play as they beat Danbury J 7-3.

Tom Adam and Matt Newton were unbeaten for OCs E as they defeated Elmtree Excalibur F 8-2 in division five whilst Frank Hodge and Tom Barker turned in similar unbeaten performances as OCs F defeated Highwood 8-2. OCs’ Matt Porter just failed to take a hat-trick. He missed out against Kevin Barber 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 6-11, 11-13 in the last game of the evening.  Highwood in turn tasted success against OCs H winning 6-4. Martin Goddard won his three singles whilst Kevin Barber picked up two wins. Chelmsford G won the last two games to beat OCs G 6-4. Ian Austin and daughter Sarah were both undefeated with Ian beating Fred Mastin 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 in the last game to secure his team’s
victory.

Chelmsford K (Callum Webster and Jennie Crapnell) and Black Notley (William Brazier and George Wallace) both won 5-0 in the CLICK League. New Club Felsted Royal British Legion were the victims on both occasions. Chelmford’s Jennie Crapnell came under the most pressure in these two games. She had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Nicholas Butler 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 and Ashley Butler 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-13, 12-10.
