Cheshire County Closed: Halton youngsters are four-midable

Harry Watson, Robyn Cosgrove and Joe Pilkington were multiple title winners at the Cheshire County Closed Championships.

The event was held over two days at the Select Security Stadium, Regional Table Tennis Centre Widnes, with International Referee Karen Tonge MBE at the helm.

Halton players Watson and Cosgrove starred in the Junior events on day one, both winning four titles.

Day two saw Pilkington, of Wirral, return from Grantham College to also win four titles, while Tony Worthington of Wilmslow, now in the over-50s but who has not played since his junior county team days, won three.

DAY ONE

Junior Boys’ Singles Final (U18)
Ryan Lunn of Halton TTC beat 12-year-old team-mate Harry Watson 9, -8, 5, 8.

Junior Boys’ Doubles Final

Ryan Lunn and Harry Watson

Ryan Lunn and Harry Watson combined to beat Jordan Glendenning and Alex Poyner from Warrington 8, 6, 8.

Junior Mixed Doubles Final
Harry Watson & Robyn Cosgrove of Halton combined to just beat Callum Tizard & Peyton Klopper in a hard-fought final for the newcomers from Crewe (-11, 4, -15, 6, 3).

Cadet Boys’ Singles Final (U15)
Harry Watson won the first of his titles on the day, beating Connor Whitehead of Warrington 3, 2, 3 to retain his title.

U13 Boys’ Singles Final
A by now a wilting Harry Watson was pushed hard by Matthew Webster from Wirral, in his last final of the day to win 15, 5, 6 to retain his title.

Junior Girls’ Singles Final
Robyn Cosgrove Halton won her first final, beating a promising Peyton Klopper from Crewe in the final 4, 4, 4.

Cadet Girls’ Singles Final
Robyn Cosgrove then went on to beat fellow Halton player Anais O’Connor 1, 2, 9.

U13 Girls’ Singles Final
In an all Halton final, Lucy McColm beat Anais O’Connor 8, 4, 6.

U11 Girls’ Singles Final
In another all Halton final, Lucy McColm beat Mollie Anderson 7, 5, 1.

Junior Girls’ Doubles Final

Robyn Cosgrove and Anais O’Connor of Halton combined to beat Lucy McColm (Halton) and Penny Page (Hillcourt) in the final 7, 6, 6.

DAY TWO

Men’s Singles Final
There was a new county champion this year with junior player Joe Pilkington of Wirral beating an injured Kevin Dolder 7, 6, 7.

Women’s Singles Final

Annie Hudson

Played as a large round-robin, three players were tied on three wins. Countback resulted in Annie Hudson (Warrington) being crowned county champion, with last year’s winner Rachel Baker (Warrington) runner-up and Kate Roberts (Halton) in third.

Men’s Doubles Final
Joe Pilkington then played with junior Kin Fung Chan from Altrincham to win the doubles championships, defeating Kevin Dolder and junior Ryan Lunn from Halton -7, -10, 13, 5, 7.

Women’s Doubles Final
Annie Hudson and Rachel Baker of Warrington combined to beat Kate Roberts and Robyn Cosgrove of Cheshire 5, 6, -10, 7.

Mixed Doubles Final

Kate Roberts and Joe Pilkington

Joe Pilkington combined with Kate Roberts (Halton) to overcome Warrington players George Lennon & Rachel Baker in a very long and exciting match -6, 6, 10, -7, 8.

Restricted Singles Final

Tony Worthington

Tony Worthington and Jordan Potts of Wilmslow met in this final, with Tony coming out winner 6, -6, 8, -11, 7.

Grade A Singles Final
Adam Thompson  of Altrincham beat Jordan McGarry Halton  8, 13, -7, 10.

Grade B Singles Final
Tim Vaughan of Stockport was the convincing winner, beating Pete Welch Snr from the Wirral 3, 3, 3.

Open Disability Final
This was a repeat of the Grade A final, with Adam Thompson  of Altrincham this time beating Jordan McGarry in three (4, 3, 2).

Over-40s’ Singles Final
Tony Worthington (Wilmslow) beat Rob Wylie (Ellesmere Port & Chester) in the last match of the day 8, 9, -9, 7 to achieve a hat-trick of wins.

Over-50s’ Singles Final
Played earlier in the afternoon, Tony Worthington beat George Lennon (Warrington) 8, -11, 4, 6.

Over-60s’ Singles Final
This resulted in a win for local county official Ray Jackson of Halton, beating Tony Slinger of Stockport 5, -11, 9, 6.

Over-70s’ Singles Final
Doreen Schofield, county stalwart from Stockport, beat Jean Morgan of Trafford, who was playing in her first closed, 2, -11, 4, 9.

Hard Bat Final
The juniors proved they could play with simple bats not just expensive bats with fast rubbers when Joe Pilkington overcame Kin Fung Chan from 4, 4, 8.
