Brotherhood win cup classic

The ‘Tie of the Round’ between Brotherhood A and Walton A in Round Two of the Handicap Knock-Out Cup lived up to all expectations as the two high-flyers from Division One produced a classic contest, Brotherhood edging it 5-4.

Brotherhood led twice, at 2-1 and 3-2, before Walton levelled at

4-all, leaving it all on the final doubles where Greg Green and David Binns (0) beat Peter Burrows and Matthew Watson (0) 3-1 (11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 11-5) to take the 2007 cup holders into round three.

In one of three other all-Division One clashes, 2012 Cup runners-up Nomads Jaguars celebrated an unexpected win over Walton C, Colin Beaumont undefeated.

Walton B were 5-2 winners over Brotherhood B, an unbeaten Graham Buxton (0) clinching victory with an 11-9 in the fifth success against John Owen (0).

Windsor Hawks defeated Windsor Eagles 5-2, the closest match seeing Felipe Rodriguez (+1) beat Mark Smith (-1) 3-2 (11-9, 11-5,

8-11, 10-12, 11-9).

Two Division One sides were eliminated by Division Two teams.

Brotherhood G beat Nomads Lions 5-2, undefeated Elliott Attrill (+1) sealing the win by beating John Fenton (-1) 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-3).

Laurence Torr won all his four matches as Brotherhood C edged out Walton D 5-4, Brotherhood coming back from 4-2 down to take victory.

Three all-Division Two ties were tightly-contested.

Nomads Tigers won four of the last five matches against Lawford to win 5-4, Simon Smith-Daye and Tony Robinson (0) beating Paul Hewitt and John Colvin (0) 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9) in a nerve-jangling final doubles.

It was a similar last-gasp effort for Windsor Magpies, 5-4 victors against Brotherhood F, Dave Martin and Graham Bunce (0) edging out David North and Barry Allen (0) 3-2 (6-11, 11-9, 11-3, 10-12, 11-9) in match nine.

Five of the matches between Brotherhood D and Windsor Owls went to a deciding set, Brotherhood winning 5-3 with Lee Harvey unbeaten.

Division Two strugglers Brotherhood E enjoyed a 5-1 success over Division Three promotion contenders Nomads Pumas, Gary Bayliss unbeaten.

It was tougher for Second Division Windsor Harriers who were stretched by Third Division Brotherhood L before winning 5-3, Ferdy Rodriguez’s unbeaten performance included (-8) a 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10) win over Debra Found (+2).
