WALTON STROLL TO PROMOTION

Walton D confirmed their promotion from Division Two of the Clacton and District Table Tennis League this week with a 9-1 win over nearest rivals Windsor Hawks.

George Kalli was Walton’s best player on the night with an unbeaten three and although Colin Dearman took his maximum it was a close 11-7 in the decider against John Barton.

Dearman and John Rice just maintained Walton’s unbeaten doubles record with a narrow 12-10 in the fifth win against Andy Vincent and Dave Austin whilst Vincent picked up the Hawks’ sole point with a victory in four over John Rice.

The Hawks are still favourites to take the second promotion spot but Nomads Lions have not yet given up the chase, this week beating Brotherhood F 8-2 with reserve Paul Hume excelling to stay undefeated.

At the bottom, Brotherhood E edged past Nomads Lynx 6-4, Tony Edmonds and Duncan Dunne for Brotherhood, and Mike Vilka and Paul Weston for the Lynx all taking two, Edmonds beating Vilka

11-6 in the fifth in match ten to secure the Brotherhood victory.

But the win may have come too late to save Brotherhood E from the drop whilst the Lynx’s defeat means they are definitely relegated.

Richard Spence stayed unbeaten as Lawford drew for the seventh time this season, this against Windsor Magpies, whilst Windsor Owls scraped past Windsor Ravens 6-4, Tricia Salter’s 11-7 in the decider win over Brian Thiel ultimately proving crucial.

Windsor Harriers defeated Brotherhood D 8-2, Harriers’ skipper Ferdy Rodriguez beating Shaun Beckham 15-13 in the decider but losing out 11-6 in the fifth to Russell Hillier and 11-8 in the fifth to Lee Harvey.

In Division Three Nomads Cougars beat Windsor Kites 10-0, Harry Beezer’s three for the winners including a tight 3-2 (11-4, 11-8, 10-12, 10-12, 11-9) success against Chris Simson.

Nomads Tigers also recorded a 10-0 result, defeating Brotherhood H with every match settled in three.

Third-placed Brotherhood K lost ground despite their 6-4 victory over Windsor Penguins, Brian Baines and Elliott Attrill winning two each for Brotherhood, Darren Bunce and Ray Chillingworth taking two apiece for the Penguins.

Andrew Cousins and Lionel Goddard took trebles for Nomads Pumas in the 9-1 win against Nomads Bobcats, Barry Brandon beating John Houghton 3-2 (8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 13-11) for the Bobcats’ hard-fought consolation point.

Brotherhood G defeated Windsor Swallows 7-3, Fred Gallone undefeated, Rowan Cottee and James Smith-Daye taking two each, whilst there was a pair apiece for Roger McNaughton and Hazel Blanche as Nomads Leopards beat Brotherhood L 6-4.

In Division One Brotherhood A enjoyed a 10-0 win over Nomads Jaguars as did Windsor Roosters against Windsor Falcons, Roosters’ reserve Gary Stallwood playing well to stay unbeaten.

With just four matches to play, only six points separate the Roosters, the Condors and Brotherhood A at the top, but defeat for the Jaguars means they are definitely relegated along with bottom-team Windsor Kestrels.

Finally, no-one stayed unbeaten but every player took a point as Windsor Eagles edged past Brotherhood B 6-4, John Hobson and Sue Welham winning two each for the Eagles as did John Owen for Brotherhood B.

* The League’s Closed Championships will take place over the weekend of 21st and 22nd April. Entry forms have been sent to all eligible players.
