Paul stars in match of surprises

Paul Hume proved he’s a player with a future, taking a second hat-trick of the season for Nomads Cougars in their encounter this week with Brotherhood C in Division Two of the Clacton and District League.

Hume recorded top-class wins in three-straight over experienced players Kevin Pryor and Fred Gallone before edging out Lawrence Torr 7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 16-14 to help his side to a well-deserved share of the spoils against their promotion-seeking opponents.

Every player picked up a point in a match of surprises, Sam Hume beating Torr but losing to Gallone, Kevin Pryor struggling before beating Sam Hume 11-3, 11-8, 11-7, 11-13, 11-9, whilst Adam Cuthbert picked up a vital point for the Cougars by defeating Gallone in three.

Brotherhood C were involved in another top-of-the-table clash with Lawford but this time it was Lawrence Torr who produced the fireworks, playing fine table tennis to take a treble which included a superb 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 victory over the previously-undefeated Richard Spence, as well as sharing a doubles success with Pryor against Spence and Ian Sherwood.

Alas for Torr, Lawford took the match 6-4 with Spence, Sherwood and Peter Sear all winning twice.

And the out-of-towners from Lawford went back to the top of the table following a second 6-4 win against Nomads Ocelots, this time Spence staying unbeaten with Sear contributing another two points.

Elsewhere in the Division, Russell Hillier was the outstanding player for Brotherhood D in their match with Brotherhood G, undefeated in the 7-3 victory. Elliott Attrill won twice for the losers with unexpected wins over Lee Harvey and Shaun Beckham, and shared a doubles win with Dan Malinowski, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, over Hillier and Harvey.

Windsor Harriers beat Brotherhood E 8-2, Windsor’s Ferdy Rodriguez beating both Tony Edmonds and Gary Bayliss in five, and Jenny Higgins’ two including a nail-biting 13-11, 6-11, 13-11, 3-11, 12-10 victory over Brotherhood’s Rodney Betts.

There was no Simon Smith-Daye for Nomads Tigers, nor Dave Martin for Windsor Magpies, so it was Tigers’ skipper Tony Robinson who stepped up to the plate with an excellent maximum to help his side to a 7-3 success. Graham Bunce won two for Windsor with Ron Dacey taking their third point with a 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 13-11 victory over Eric Lemke.

Three for Gary Stallwood, two for Tricia Salter and one for Sue Watson saw Windsor Owls home 6-4 against Windsor Ravens.

Division Three leaders Brotherhood J had their toughest match of the season but edged it 6-4 against Windsor Swallows, Tom Burton unbeaten. Sheila Howe had a strenuous evening, defeating Kelvin Olano 11-9, 3-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8, struggling to beat Lucy Burton 11-4 in the fifth, and losing to Tom Burton after a mammoth first set 20-18, 2-11, 9-11, 5-11.

Brotherhood I moved into second place after their 10-0 win over Nomads Wildcats, Allen Denyer, Rowan Cottee and James Smith-Daye all taking hat-tricks but Harry Beezer impressed for the Wildcats, narrowly losing 11-5 in the fifth to Cottee and 11-9 in the fifth to Denyer.

Nomads Pumas enjoyed a good scrap with Windsor Penguins before winning 6-4, John Bowers and John Houghton taking a couple each for the Pumas, Ray Chillingworth again unbeaten for the Penguins.

There were three for Tom Wilkin, two for Gerald Batt and one for Michael Gallone as Brotherhood H defeated Brotherhood K 7-3, Brian Baines winning twice for the losers.

Tony Rayner and Roger McNaughton were Nomads Leopards’ undefeated duo in the 8-2 success against Brotherhood L, Jonathan Found and Morgan Harvey taking a point apiece for the losers.

Nomads Bobcats beat Windsor Kites 10-0 and Brotherhood M 8-2, Denise Thompson’s unbeaten three in the latter match including a good win over Cris Edwards although Cris recorded an excellent victory in her own right over Harry Hawkes.

In their second match, Brotherhood M – fielding a guest player – drew with Nomads Lynx, Cris Edwards unbeaten this time with Gracie Edwards winning one but losing close in five to both Mike Vilka and Kevin Hume.

In Division One leaders Walton A inflicted a first defeat of the season on Windsor Hawks, John Rice, Colin Dearman and Matt Watson all recording hat-tricks in the 9-1 win, although Rice struggled to beat Felipe Rodriguez 11-8 in the fifth and Andy Vincent 11-9 in the fifth, whilst Rodriguez and Vincent combined to take the Hawks’ sole point in the doubles.

Brotherhood A were comfortable 10-0 winners over Nomads Lions, Nomads’ John Hatley taking Dave Binns to a fifth set whilst Hatley and John Fenton ran Binns and Adam Douch close in the doubles before the Brotherhood pair took it 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 9-11, 11-5.

In an all-Windsor clash the Condors defeated a weakened Kestrels 10-0, Jim Pallett‘s hat-trick including an 11-8 in the decider win against Chris Petrou and an even closer 12-10 in the decider victory over Frank Burbidge.

There were two more 10-0 results, Nomads Panthers comfortably beating Brotherhood B with none of the matches extended to a fifth set, whilst Walton C’s Jekyll and Hyde season continued with victory over Nomads Jaguars, only Paul Meikle’s victory over Colin Beaumont going the distance.

Finally, it was 7-3 for Walton D against Winsor Eagles, Kevin Gowlett and Kevin James both unbeaten for the winners.
