Liam McTiernan overcame his seeding to progress

With over 20 men’s singles groups in action over the course of Saturday there are plenty of top matches and players progressing into the preliminary rounds.

There were a few shocks among the early results from the qualifying groups as youngster Liam McTiernan progressed from his group after comfortably beating ETTA Regional Coach Shaun Marples 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-8) to upset the seedings and reach the knock-out phase.

Equally there was a seeding shock as Jojo Senorin (seeded 56) beat Matt Dodds (29) in their group to reach the next stage.

After the preliminary rounds the competitions becomes much more intense with the seeds introduced and the chances of a really big upset become much more apparent.

One who might be hoping to cause one of these upsets is cadet star Helshan Weerasinghe who comfortably upset his seeding in his group by beating James Ward 3-1 (11-9, 2-11, 11-4, 11-7).

Other players who have reached the play-off matches are David Arrowsmith, Adam Nutland, Ian Musk, Mike O’Driscoll, Jon Hall, Lee Neil, Sam Perry, Kim Daybell, Eli Baraty and Neil Charles.

More qualifying results to follow later.
