Matt Leete was defeated, but four English players went through in the singles competitions at the European Youth Championships in Portugal.

Josh Bennett and Luke Savill went through to the last 64 of the Junior Boys’ Singles, where they will join eighth seed Tom Jarvis, but Matt Leete was eliminated.

Denise Payet and Megan Gidney went through in the Junior and Cadet Girls’ events respectively, the latter to join Charlotte Bardsley in the last 64.

But it was not such a good day in the doubles, with all the English players in action going out. Josh Bennett & Luke Savill came closest to going through, holding match points in the fourth game against Istvan Patrik Molnar (HUN) & Andrei Putuntica (MDA) before going out 3-2.

Bardsley and her partner Linda Zaverova of the Czech Republic are yet to play in the Cadet Girls’ Doubles and have a last-32 tie today.
