Megan Gidney went out in the last 16 of the Junior Girls’ Singles and lost to the top seeds in the quarter-finals of the doubles alongside Denise Payet at the Spanish Junior & Cadet Open. Payet, Charlotte Bardsley and Ethan Walsh also all reached the main draw.

Gidney topped her group with three victories, including an impressive 3-2 (11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 12-14, 11-8) win over seventh seed Fadwa Garci of Tunisia. She then got through her last-32 tie against Ana Maria Vertiz of the host nation 4-2 (11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 13-11, 3-11, 13-11) to reach today’s last 16, where she played Russia’s Vlada Voronina.

However, despite taking the first two games and leading in the third, she was defeated 4-2 (6-11, 6-11, 16-14, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6).

Payet and Bardsley went through as group runners-up with two wins each – Bardsley lost out against fourth seed Elizabet Abraamian of Russia. But both went out in the last 32 – Bardsley to 14th seed Huang Yu-Jie of Chinese Taipei by a 4-1 (11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4) scoreline and Payet to Russia’s Anastasiia Beresneva 4-2 (11-6, 11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7).

Walsh also won his group, including a good 3-2 (8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9) victory over the higher-ranked Lovro Zovko of Croatia, and then went out in the last 64, 4-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9) to Iker Gonzalez of the host nation.

Joe Cope, Sam Wilson and Shayan Siraj all went out in the group stage, with a walkover for Siraj the only victory between them – though they all lost at least one match in a decider.

In the doubles, Payet & Gidney are seeded eighth and got their campaign off to a winning start in the last 16, defeating Lisa Lange & Rikke Skattet of Norway 3-2 (11-9, 13-11, 10-12, 6-11, 11-8). They faced top seeds Abraamian & Ekaterina Zironova of Russia today and were defeated 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-5), though they looked to be in the match when then led the second game 9-4.

Bardsley, partnering Norway’s Martine Toftaker, went out 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-8) to Russian pair Voronina & Alina Zavarykina in the round of 32.

The two boys’ pairings went out to seeded opposition in the first round, Cope & Walsh 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-7) to 10th seeds Nikita Moshkov & Artem Tikhonov of Russia and Siraj & Wilson 3-2 (11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 14-12, 11-1) to 13th seeds Goncalo Gomes & Jose Magalhaes of Portugal.
