Tom Jarvis and Matthew Daish could not join seeds Sam Walker and Paul Drinkhall in the main draw of the Serbia Open as they both went out in the group stage.

Jarvis was up against host nation player Dimitrije Levajac in his first match and, despite a close match, his opponent won in three. With Levajac also having beaten Tilen Cvetko, it rendered Jarvis’ victory over Cvetko as irrelevent to deciding top spot in the three-player group.

Daish was competitive against two higher-ranked opponents from Russia and Venezuela but lost in four on both occasions and a walkover against his final opponent was not enough to see him through.

So it leaves fifth seed Walker and 12th seed Drinkhall carrying England’s hopes into the last 64 on Friday – Walker against world No 591 Shogo Tahara of Japan and Drinkhall against Leo de Nodrest of France, ranked at 280.

Jarvis is the fifth seed in the under-21s and will face Nicolas Burgos of Chile in the last 32 on Friday. Daish went out in the group stage.

In the doubles, Daish was partnered with Norway’s Adrian Wetzel and they went out to a Swedish pair in three straight in the first preliminary round. Walker & Drinkhall are the fourth seeds and enter the competition on Saturday in the last 16.
