Tom Jarvis won his group to move into the main draw of the Belarus Open in Minsk, but Maria Tsaptsinos and Emily Bolton were knocked out in qualifying.

Jarvis wasted little time in defeating Alexandr Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan and Belgium’s Thibaut Darcis both 4-0, to set up a tie against Tomas Konecny of the Czech Republic, the world No 121, tomorrow.

Tsaptsinos beat Chen Zewen of China in her first group match, but defeat to Anastasiia Komova of Russia saw her exit, while Bolton was defeated by Elizabet Abraamian of Russia and Chiara Colantoni of Italy.

In the Under-21 events, both Tsaptsinos and Bolton also went out in the groups, although both won one of their two matches. In Bolton’s case, it was an impressive win over Nikita Petrovova of Czech Republic, who at No 72 on the world U21 list is ranked more than 200 places above Bolton.

Jarvis, the No 13 seed, was edged out by Li Haoze of China in the last 64 of the Under-21 Men’s Singles, despite holding a 2-0 lead. The game turned in a tight third game, which the Chinese won 13-11.

There was delight for Tsaptsinos & Bolton in the opening preliminary round of the women’s doubles as they defeated Russian pair Anastasia Kolish & Valeria Shcherbatykh, but they were eliminated in the next round by a South Korean pair.
