None of the England teams were able to make it through to the knockout rounds at the Spanish Junior & Cadet Open, despite some good battles in the groups.

The Junior Girls’ line-up of Denise Payet, Charlotte Bardsley and Megan Gidney picked up a good 3-0 win over Portugal and then fought hard against top seeds Russia, taking at least one game in every match before going out.

The Cadet Girls’ squad of Ruby Chan, Anaya Patel and Millie Rogove also won their first match, against one of the Spanish teams, with Chan winning her two singles. But they were then knocked out by fourth seeds Chinese Taipei.

The Junior Boys went down 3-1 to France II and third seeds Portugal, with Sam Wilson and Shayan Siraj picking up the points and Ethan Walsh edged out 3-2 in three matches across the two fixtures.

There were two England teams in the Cadet Boys. The second team of Thomas Rayner & Jie Fu Tham were edged out 3-2 by Spain II, despite a singles victory for Rayner and taking the doubles to lead 2-1. They were also beaten 3-0 by third seeds France, though the doubles went to 12-10 in a decider.

Louis Price and Ben Piggott were defeated 3-0 in their two matches against Spain IV and fifth seeds Russia II.

The individual Cadet competitions take place over the weekend.
